I woke up in a room I barely recognized. It felt somewhat familiar, like a dream I'd had once before, but I couldn't place my finger on where I was.

"Oh, good, you're awake!"

A familiar voice had me sitting up on the bed, her bed, which I'd been laid down on. "Sitara, thank God, it's just you!" I looked around me. "When did I get here? How drunk was I?"

She shook her head. "That's not exactly how you got here. I mean, you were blacked out...in a way."

"What do you mean?"

Sitara glanced over at a window. "Well, I may or...may not have been involved in sending a few of my friends to your place with my spare key to have them kidnap you."

I blinked once. Twice. The words entered my ears, but they didn't quite register in my brain. "You...kidnapped me?"

She nodded. "And, on the way out, you sort of punched my friend in the nuts, and he knocked you out. Speaking of which, um, there may or may not also be a bruise on the back of your head."

I put a hand up, feeling around. Sure enough, my fingers grazed over a sensitive spot, and I winced at the jolt of pain it sent. "Okay, so, why did you...uh, kidnap me?" I asked, trying to remain calm. "That's a really weird thing to do to your best friend, you know."

"You should call your dad," she said, sitting up from the chair she'd been in. "He can explain it."

With that, she exited the bedroom, and my thoughts began to race. Why did Sitara kidnap me? What did my dad have to do with all of this stuff?

Desperate for answers, I listened to Sitara and opened my phone. I went over to my "Frequently Contacted" list, which had my dad, my boss, and a couple of friends from my job on it. Sighing, I called my dad, who seemed to answer immediately.

"Honey, are you okay?!" he almost yelled. "I heard that they had to use a little force to get you to cooperate! Are you doing alright?!" He started to mumble, more to himself than me. "If Marcus hurt a single hair on her head, I'll strangle him myself."

"Dad, what's going on?" I asked, getting straight to the point. "I mean, my best friend just kidnapped me and said that you know why. So, please, tell me."

He didn't talk for a minute. When he did, it was low and soft. "I asked them to. To keep you safe."

"Safe from what?" My head started to spin. "Dad, this isn't funny! Whatever trick you're playing isn't working on me!"

"I've done a lot of bad things recently," he spoke, silencing me. "Illegal things. Terribles things. You have to understand, I did this because I wanted to keep you safe." He made a sound, almost like a sob. "I've made terrible mistakes,  and I have to make everything right. Until I do that, you have to stay with Sitara and her friends. Please, trust me."

"I'll trust you if you tell me exactly what's going on," I demanded. "I mean, you can't expect me to just accept that you've admitted to...committing crimes of whatever degree, and then tell me to stay away! What the Hell is going on?! I just got kidnapped, I deserve to know why!"

"Language!" he shouted, reminding me, for a moment, of when I was little and used to say things before asking what they mean. "I mean, uh..."

Dad sighed. "Okay. I've been involved in a few drug deals recently. A few identities stolen. Breaking and entering. Um, capital offense, on multiple occasions. Gang activity."

Tears welled up in my eyes. "And all of that's true? You've done that stuff?"

"Yes, but you have to understand, I-"

"I don't care why!" I didn't even know why I was so upset. A lot was happening, and I couldn't process it fast enough. My emotiond werd much faster than my mind. "I mean, that stuff is still illegal, Dad! Christ, I've been getting a job and working my ass of in San Francisco while you've been leading this crazy life of crime?! This is fucking nuts!"

"I know, I know," he said, trying to soothe me. "Just trust me when I say that I'll make everything right, okay? All I need you to do is stay with Sitara. She will keep you safe, you just have to trust her." His voice got quiter, going into that emotional way he tended to use, the one that always made me agree. It was basically his equivalent to puppy dog eyes. "Put some faith in your Papa, alright? Believe it or not, sometimes, he actually knows what he's doing."

"I'll stay with her," I said, "but you better promise to give me every last detail whenever you're done."

"I promise. I love you, sweetheart."

A couple more tears fell. "I love you, too, Dad."

The line went dead a moment later. Sitara re-entered the roon, likely coming to the conclusion that we'd stopped talking.

"How you holding up?" she asked, stepping in calmly. I looked up, and she saw the tears on my face. "Not well, I'm guessing."

She held her arms out for a hug, and I stood from the bed and carried myself over to her. Those comforting arms held me close, and the familiar feeling of hugging my best friend washed over me. In fact, I couldn't remember the last time I'd even spoken to Sitara.

"Do you have some, uh, publically acceptable clothes I could borrow?" I asked. "I was thinking you could introduce me to your friends, maybe let me apologize to that guy I punched."

She smiled, releasing me from the hug. After giving my body a quick run with her eyes, she smiled and lead me to her closet. "I have just the outfit for you!"
