A shrill shriek. A cold laugh.
There was nothing left of the prosperous island that was once filled with joy and sunshine.
Thank god for that, she thought. Eyelin disliked the happy sounds of life. Too warm, too joyful, too...... alive.
A stray leaf blew through the dark ally she stood in. She watched as the graying piece danced its last dance, contorting itself as the wind picked up speed. Around and around it went, seemingly trying to convince itself that this wasn't reality, but a mere bad dream. Somewhere in the deathly still city, a lone crow cawed a sorrowful song. The leaf, with its green and yellow colors, struck forcefully onto a crumbling brick wall.
It fell along with the dying wind.
Eyelin eyed the lifeless leaf on the blackened pavement. "Be free, poor soul." She whispered, crushing the leaf under her boot.
Thunder crackled hungrily as she peered up at the sky. The leaf had disappeared from under her shoe.
It had severed its ties to this world, and was now free. Free as a bird, unlike the last girl alive in this city. No, not a city, she thought, walking up the stairs of the highest building. A cage.
The storm clouds were gathering.
Her heart thundered in response to the shrieking wind howling outside. Was it fear?
No. It was anticipation.
Free, her mind wandered to the leaf she destroyed earlier.
Her steps took her to the tip of the building.
Silence.
A whip of energy came crashing down on Eyelin, engulfing her entire being.
The last thing on her mind was four words:
I am finally free.
