Home is where the family is. Family is what keeps that home stable. Without one another, we'd be nothing. We all love each other. We all care for each other. We protect one another, right?

If he loved us so much, then why did he leave us? Why did he leave Mother and I to fend for ourselves?

...

I was only seven. In the middle of the night, I heard the downstairs door creak open. Cold air from outside blew in ever so slightly. The place was dark. The outside, darker. But the thing that caught my mind was a silhouette. It belonged to a man with with a well built body. "Dad, is that you?" I asked as the person swiftly turned around.

"Aphmau? You should be sleep," my dad spoke.

I grabbed a lantern and ignited it. The small blaze was just enough light for me to see his facade. His caramel skin had some dirt on it. His dark brown eyes were locked in a gaze with my sunset eyes.

We looked at each other, hesitant to say anything."Dad," I began as I broke the silence,"Where are you going?"

He sighed. His hand traveled to the top of his head as he slicked back his raven hair. "Sweetheart, I have something important to do. I want you go back to sleep,k?"

My facial expression dropped. "Will you be back soon?" I asked.

He moved his hand from the back of his head. He then placed it on my head. "I can't say," his voice croaked.

He began to walk away. Before his body reached the door frame, I spoke. "Hey Dad."

"Yeah?"

"I love you."

His blank facial expression then turned to one of happiness and satisfaction."I love you too."

He walked away with a bag in one hand and his other to his heart. The door closed behind him softly. The wind was still howling outside. The only thing I could think of was when he would come back.

I remember waking up the next morning. Mother was cursing up a storm. After I was awoken by her antics, I crept my was to the room. I peaked past the oak door and saw the state my mother was in. Her head was resting in her hands. The room was trashed and there was broken glass on the floor. Mother was enraged. "I can't believe that bastard left!" she yelled.

She then grabbed a shoe and chucked it at the dresser mirror, which shattered it to pieces.

"He didn't even bother to pay the damn rent before he left!" she cursed.

I walked into the room. Mother turned to look at me. "Aphmau," she stuttered.

"I woke you up didn't I?" she said softly.

I simply nodded. I slowly walked towards her and she engulfed me into a hug. "I'm sorry," she began as she sobbed.

I was taken aback by her reaction. I then remember something important from the previous night. Dad left, saying he had some business.

Then, realization hit me. He left us.
