THURSDAY
The piercing sound of a blood curdling scream jerks me from my deep sleep.
Im on my feet in seconds, heart thumping out of my chest. My eyes are blurry and my head is spinning as I swing my door open and try to locate where the screams are coming from.My blood runs cold when I realize that the horrible sound is coming from Jamie's room.
My body is switched to autopilot, and I'm jerking the door open before my mind can rationalize it.Jamie is thrashing in her bed, eyes screwed shut, and letting out more and more screams as the seconds tick by.
My hands reach out to touch her. I need to wake her up.
"Stop!! Let her go!!!" She screams, kicking her feet furiously under the sheet.
"Jamie! Jamie!!" I shake her.
"Come on JJ. Wake up!" I plead. I hate seeing her this way.Her eyes finally fly open and she's gasping for air. Her hair is damp and she sits up, looking around the dark room wildly.
"Hey, hey, hey. You're okay. It's just me. It's Matt."
Her bottom lip trembles and she chokes on a sob before throwing her shaking arms around me and sobbing loudly into my neck.
"Shhh.... you're okay. I got you." I soothe.
"He...he was gonna kill her!" She cries.
I swallow and pet her hair gently.
"I know, I know. You're okay now. He's gone."
"Should I go get someone?"She jerks away quickly and shakes her head.
"No. No, I'm okay."Her eyes are scared and, against my better judgment, I nod. My heart breaks for her. I've never seen her look so scared and shaken. She's always so confident and happy, you tend to forget the hell shes gone through.
"Do you get them a lot?" I ask quietly.
She sniffs and wipes under her eyes, trying to calm her ragged breathing.
"I haven't had them in a couple months...." she pauses, taking a deep breath.
"I thought I had gotten over it. I thought I was finally getting better.""You are. Having gone months without one is a major accomplishment. No one expects you to just forget everything you've been through."
She shakes her head and swallows harshly, ducking her head down.
"I just wanna forget it all. And every time I think I'm actually starting to move on, I start reliving that night over and over again."I don't know what to say. So, instead I pull her back into my arms and I hold her trembling body.
Her body eventually stills and she removes her tear stained face from the crook of my neck, resting her head against my shoulder.
"What time is it?"
Her voice is so hoarse and scratchy that I can barely understand her.I sigh and glance at the clock behind us.
"Almost five in the morning.""Will you stay? Please?"
"Yeah sure. Come on."
I shift and let her lay back down on her pillow, placing the sheet back on top of her.
She slides over to make room for me in the small bed and I slide her the covers beside her."I love you Matty." She mumbles.
I smile, closing my eyes.
"I love you too JJ."
