Church was important in the Vantas household, God as a figure was pushed to be as important as food, water, or air. As the oldest son of a Preacher, it was your responsibility to do Sunday school, Wednesday prayer, and play the piano for the sermons. You had fallen in love with the instrument from a young age, and refused to go to church unless you got piano lessons. Every time you played a key you felt your soul brighten. As father spoke to the church you silently played the keys, the choir humming softly to your tune. It was peaceful. You looked through your dark bangs that hung in front of your face at your little brother only 5 years younger than you, he looked bored out of his mind. He peered at you and gave you the eyes that said " I want to leave this shithole." He gave you those eyes often. You looked at him with eyes of tired concern, he ignored you and leaned his head back on the pew. You continued on playing the keys softly. Your father finished the sermon quickly after your interaction with your brother and dismissed the church; you guessed he was more tired than his voice led on. You cleaned up the sheet music and placed it in your messenger bag. It was a simple black bag with a cross keychain, and of course a tag with your name, house number, and house address. Father walked over to you and placed his hand on your shoulder.
"How was that Kanny?"
"Great as always Father" Your voice was monotone, and he noticed.
"Soon maybe you'll become a preacher, I know Karkat isn't particularly interested in God."
"Father I have already decided what I wish to do. And preaching to the masses in a house of God isn't it."
"But its so invigorating, especially after wards, when you look and see the Holy Spirit within the flames of the candles. It's poetic in a sense." He looked across the back wall where candles covered the back shelving under neath the cross of Jesus. The statue stared at you as you played always. It could see through you, and you knew it.
"Father its much better if you do it, I could never live up to what you preach. And if you could refrain from calling me "kanny" mother used to call me that, you know how it hurts me."
At this the preacher softened, remembering his wife. The one buried only a couple of yards away. She has passed when Karkat was born, you believe his anger is from his resentment of himself, blaming himself for his moms death. Sometimes you wished medicine was better, that maybe she could've stayed. You quickly get off the topic as Karkat stepped up to the alter, where you and father were standing.
"Can we leave, I'm starving" Your father chuckled at the comment, while you sighed. You left the pews of the church while the nuns and choir cleaned up and blew out the candles. The ride back to the house was short and quiet. You mostly reviewing next weeks piece. Karkat drummed his fingers against his legs and you rolled your eyes.
As the Vantas family stepped into the house, they took off their shoes and each kissed their fingers and touched the Virgin Mary statue adorned with pictures of the deceased mother. The father went to his office and would stay in there till dawn, it being on the complete opposite side of the house from the boys bedrooms. Karkat grabbing leftovers went to his room and locked himself in with a door slam. Kankri however went to the back porch to read near a lamp.  He flipped through the pages of his story and heard the crunching of leaves behind him.
"If your trying to scare me it isnt working." You heard chuckling behind you, it was soft but loud.
"Jeez chief you could at least give me a chance" You felt arms wrap your frame, and a small kiss on top of your head. Oh god , I'm going to hell.
"How was church doll?"
"Same as always, filled with beautiful words blessed by the lord himself" you stated with a smirk, you flipped to the next page of your book. You heard Cronus snort.
"Sure chief, suuuuure" His voice dripping with sarcasm. You looked at him his eyes entranced with yours. You set down the book and looked at your "close friend." Cronus Ampora, the oldest son of the Ampora family, of which his father would claim. He was tall, had dark blue eyes, and dyed black hair greased up until a tornado couldn't move it. He was anything but holy, a demon of sorts. He loved teasing you and making your desires burn. He's the one that will pull you down to the flames, and you'll gladly go. How you and him met was in school, it was obvious you wouldn't get along, until you found your shared love in music. You both spent lunch in the music room, and not only did you share sheets of music, but shared kisses and hugs. You Kankri Vantas, weren't interested in woman in the slightest, Cronus liked everything with a nice tail end, and a pretty face; and according to him, you exceeded those requirements. Speaking of Cronus he finally noticed you staring at him and he's smirking.
"Like what you see hot stuff"
You rolled your eyes and sat down next to him on your lawn furniture. You weren't worried about anyone seeing as beyond your backyard was woods, and your neighborhood was small and quiet.  You picked up your book again flipped back to where you were. You could feel Cronus' breath on your neck as he read over your shoulder. Cronus wasn't a reader; Cronus was the typical greaser, and i have a feeling that would never change, he always looks like he wants trouble, but I know deep down he's a huge softy. When we have private times like this he shows how sweet and charming he can be, I guess that's why I risk being caught with him. Speaking of "him", Cronus your "special friend" is now placing small kisses along your neck. You feel your self blush as you subconsciously lean your head away so he could have more of your neck. Your book started trembling in your hands as you felt his warm, course tongue on your skin. Then a window opened and you and Cronus froze. Karkat was climbing out of his window with a bag and looking at you with a "deer in the headlights" look. You coughed and stood up placing your book down.
"I wont tell dad, if you don't either"
"Deal" Karkat said quickly while still looking between you and Cronus. He gave you a hug and ran off into the woods. You walked back over to Cronus, who is now smoking, is trying too get over the shakiness. I walked up to him now paicing quietly and hug him, he stops and hugs me back shakily.
"Kan, we have to be more careful, your dad could find out, my dad could find out, the whole town could find out"
"Don't you think I've thought about this; about us, God is watching me break his morals, and it hurts to betray what my parents have given me Cronus. I-" I take a step back as the door opens, the preacher looking tired"
"I don't know what you were yelling about, but its late, can you please come inside and say good bye to your friend?"
Cronus snorted at the word friend, and gave me a fist bump, i rolled my eyes and returned it. He sauntered off leaving his cigarette bud somewhere in the grass. I grabbed my book and tried to walk past my father, but he stopped me.
"Does Cronus have a girl yet, he sure is a catch"
"Yes father,Meenah, we have been over this, they are already engaged to each other."
"Are they getting married at the church? Or a church for that matter?"
"Nope neither families believe in the Holy Spirit"
"Such a shame, they could always join"
"Goodnight father" You walked to your room and closed the door, pulled out cronus' shirt of which he has given you to sleep in, and changed into it. You laid down in your bed and looked up at the ceiling. School is going to suck.
