Chapter 2: Scripts and Cinemas

It was that time of the year again: when I, Teresa-Jane Waters, began to draft, revise, and then finalize my YouTube vid scripts. And boy, did I hate it. Don't get me wrong, I love producing content for all of my fans (if there is even that many in the first place). But Olympus above, it can be tiring to write and then re-write completely different scripts for a week or sometimes more in a row. I am one of those people who really want to be organized but really isn't, and it stresses me out big-time. I've tried many a time to be more prepared, but life has hit me in the head just like an invisible volleyball going 1,000,000 miles per hour. It's difficult. Reality is: it's never going to happen. Nevertheless, I try.

Today was an especially stressful day. I had just completed reading "The Cruel Prince" by Holly Black (and loved it), and I was about ready to start taking notes on what I loved, liked, and disliked in the book so that I could start to put together a script for a booktalk on it. So normally, this is how it works: first, I read the book. Easy enough, right? Then, I go back, do some backtracking, and recall what kind of emotions I was feeling throughout the book at the different parts, and what I liked and disliked. Occasionally, I would re-read a book just for the sole purpose of taking notes on it. Luckily, I already had enough notes to go on so that I wouldn't have to do that.

That doesn't seem stressful, though, right? The most stressful part was that I was supposed to read another book that contained at least 450 pages all in one day for another video. As much as I love reading, I doubted that I'd be able to do that. When this happens, normally, I take a step back and just relax. It helps me to realize that I'm taking things too seriously and that I should stop and enjoy the books rather than just read them and not enjoy them. After all, that was the first reason why I started my channel in the first place!

So instead of getting worked up about that 450+ page book, I decided to simply focus on the booktalk video for the Cruel Prince. There were plenty of things that I liked, but also many that I disliked. There were quite a few plot holes that you could definitely see through, but it was overall enjoyable. Mindless entertainment, if you know what I mean.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed, signaling that someone was calling. The "Sisters" song from the Christmas movie "A White Christmas" (one of my absolute favorite Christmas movies) played, informing me that it was Avery who was calling. I had set the ringtone because she and I were like sisters from different misters (or however that saying goes).

I, of course, picked up immediately.

"What's up?" I answered, my usual response when friends call.

"Hey, TJ! How are you?" Avery's voice spoke up from the speakers of my iPhone X.

"Good, yet a little stressed. Just working on some scripts for YouTube," I responded truthfully.

"Ah. You seem to be doing a lot of that these days," she said.

"Yep. What about you?" I said.

"Oh, I'm doing terrific. Guess what I just got tickets for?" She said, squealing at that last part.

"Hmm. I don't know, a stage play?" I guessed. Avery loved to watch plays, and she occasionally even acted in them. She was the best actress, in my opinion, when she did. Like a good, supportive, friend, I went to every single one.

I heard her giggle. "No, even better. Guess again."

I scrunched my eyebrows in concentration. What could be better than getting tickets to a play for Avery? I'm her best friend, shouldn't I ought to know? And then it hit me like a bullet. "No way," I said, desperately hoping that what I was about to say was true.

"Yes, way!" Avery squealed again.

"You have tickets to Endgame?!" I squealed too, causing an eruption of giggles from us both. I, of course, was asking about the new Avengers movie, Endgame, that had recently came out and I still hadn't seen.

"Guess the best part," Avery prompted, after the fit of giggles was over.

"Okay," I said, thinking hard. "You got two tickets, for today, and you're calling to ask me to come with you to see it?" I guessed. I could always tell with Avery. Best friends just know.

"Yeesh, am I that predictable?" She asked. I smiled.

"No. You're just my best friend," I answered.

"Aww, that's the most sentimental you've been in a long time," she said. We again erupted into giggles (mostly because it was true). I swear, Avery has the best 'nervous laugh' you've ever heard.

"What time?" I asked.

"In one hour," Avery said, recovering almost immediately. "Can you drive this time? My car has a flat tire, so I can't do much driving," Avery explained.

"No problemo. I'll pick you up in fifteen minutes, just so we can have some extra time to buy snacks and sweets. Sound good?" I asked.

"Terrific. See you then!"

Now very excited, I undressed out of my Captain America Pajamas (my personal favorite character) and instead dressed in a cute, comfortable, and breathable outfit. After that, I quickly sprayed some dry shampoo in my hair and then brushed it out quickly. My hair is very curly and as red as red can be, and it's super annoying to tame. Normally, I have to spray something in it to calm it, go back and brush it, then style it. Today, however, I managed to straighten it and put it up in a long ponytail.

After my fashion was all said and done, I made sure to feed Voldemort and Loki, snatch some coins out of my coin jar, and then grab my keys and head out the door, all in under ten minutes. Of course, it takes about three minutes to drive to Avery's house, so I was just about in time. Avery lives with her brother, Nick Petersen, and they both live in the same house a few miles from where my apartment lies. I usually prefer to walk there, as it's about an eight-minute walk, but today, since we were driving to the movie theater after, I decided that wouldn't make any sense.

My car is amazing; it's decorated as the Mystery Machine from the older show Scooby Doo, a show that I loved when I was younger. To tell the truth, I still really love it. It was Avery's idea to decorate it as the Mystery Machine, and she would have done it with her car, but it was a few years ago and her mom and dad wouldn't let her. So, she got creative on my van and made it in the best car for miles around. She then 'gifted' it to me for my birthday, and I've gotta say, it was my favorite birthday present that I had ever received. My Love Language is Acts of Service, and even though it didn't technically count as an 'act of service.'

I quickly arrived at Avery's house, sauntered up to their front door (which was decorated by a summertime-y looking wreath; probably made by Avery), and rang the doorbell with our 'secret' ring. Not even a minute had passed when Avery opened the door. Today, she was wearing a bandana in her hair and had on some big gold hoop earrings, an off-the-shoulder yellow top, some blue ripped jeans, and yellow crocs. I looked down at her arm. She had tattooed "WAKANDA FOREVER" on her arm in the Wakandanese runes. Fashionable yet geeky, a look that I respect.

"Nice," I laughed.

"Thanks!" Avery said. "You look amazing, too, as always."

I blushed, something that only Avery can make me do. "Thanks. Likewise," I complimented.

Nick, Avery's older brother who was finishing up college in the area called out to me: "Hey, TJ! What's up?"

I yelled out back, "Hey, Nick! Nothing much."

Nick was, as I'm sure you can imagine, one of those dudes who is always busy due to his major success. In middle school, he skipped eighth grade. In high school, he skipped ninth and tenth. I'm not even sure how it's possible to be that smart, but all I'll say is that if you're looking for a math tutor, he's your guy. He really helped me out back in middle school, when I first got into reading. Nick was like the brother I never had. He treated me just like one from his family. And, with Avery's and Nick's combined wages, they could afford a small, three-room house. It was pretty cute and quaint.

Once Avery got her purse and wallet, we were off. It takes about twenty minutes to get from our area to the city that hosts the cinema, and throughout the whole car ride, we spoke about how shucking pumped we were to start the new semester of our very first year of college. Avery had applied for a different school than I. I had applied for the San Fran local college, which was at least one hundred miles away. I hoped I would get my acceptance letter soon, as I had my eye on an apartment and the apartment I wanted was in high demand.

Avery, on the other hand, applied for a college in Oxford. She had a true wanderlust heart, and she, for as long as she had lived, didn't travel much and was confined to the four walls of her home, so now, she jumped at every chance she could get to travel abroad. And besides, the college was pretty high-end, and Avery had earned a scholarship, so I had no doubt that she'd get into the 'college of her dreams' (as she claimed). I was content here, but eventually, I would probably travel abroad, just like Avery. Maybe we could be travel partners.

After twenty minutes of listening to throwback radio and catching up with each other, we arrived at the Cinema, and I was excited.
