Chapter 29

One Pace Forward

Quietly, I disabled all the alarm systems of the house from a block away. Airys sat by, anxious. He seemed scared in many ways. I could hear his heart rate picking up, and he was very jumpy. You could practically see the adrenaline flowing through him. As for me, it was the same thing.

Cracking the codes for the alarm system was a fun puzzle, but one mistake would make the alarm go off. The pressure of this was enough to make me sweat, but I also had to kidnap someone. That made the stress ever worse.

Blinking green, my borrowed mini tablet told me I finished cracking the code and was good to go. I gave Airys a nod, and he sprinted to Amber's house with quiet footsteps. I followed, falling a bit behind because he was much faster than me, and I once beat Chroma in a race.

Airys was agile as Hell. When we reached Amber's house, Airys didn't use the front door. He literally climbed up the house. He jumped up and found little crevices to hold onto to climb and he made it to the window to Chroma's room. Airys opened it and climbed in. I quickly and quietly went the long way through the house, hoping not to be heard.

I peeked into the room Airys was in and watched, ready to help. Airys stood over the sleeping Chroma, watching her. He seemed so conflicted. He looked like he was about to tear up. Maybe this was too much to ask of Airys. He loved his sister, even if she didn't even know he existed. Careful not to wake Chroma, Airys lightly caressed Chroma's face. He then reached to pick her up-

Chroma's hand shot up and grabbed Airys hand. Lightning quick, she got out of bed and threw Airys into the wall. She kept him pinned against the wall. Airys looked even more conflicted. He didn't struggle, but he looked like he wanted to.

Then I saw the blood. Airys had hit his head hard on the wall, and his nose was bleeding. I couldn't tell what color it was in the darkness of the room. The blood dripped down his nose to his lips, then it trickled into his mouth. Airys had began to freak out. His eyes widened in fear. He couldn't wipe the blood off. Chroma was restraining him. All he could do was feel the blood drip down into his mouth.

The taste of blood.

It awakens him.

I woke to the flashing of my silent alarm. Someone was disabling the alarm system. Someone was trying to get into the house. I had rigged the silent alarm to go off if someone was hacking into the alarm system.
Getting dressed super quickly, I came up with a plans in my head. The person would have to go through the front door. I'd be able to hear them if they come in that way. I'll wait and listen to where they're going and silently ambush them. If there is more than one, I'll take them out one at a time.
Creek! The window. Someone was coming through the window! Crap! I jumped back into back undetected. I stayed quiet and breathed normally. Footsteps. The footsteps walked over to my side of the best. I could hear the person's breathing. It was rapid, full of anxiety. Then I felt the touch. It touched my cheek. That's not even funny! Don't touch my cheek, stranger!
I had enough. When the person tried to pick me up, I grabbed their hand tightly, springing out of bed. I rammed them into the wall as hard as I could. The person hit their head hard on the wall. I expected the person to have been knocked out, but they were fine. The only sign of injury was the the bloody nose.
I finally caught sight of what was after me. It had curly white hair and black lamb ears. It wasn't human. Getting a better look, I saw those green eyes. Those eyes. They belonged to my mother. I'd recognize those eyes anywhere. Why did this thing have my mother's eyes? It even had her long, full eyelashes. Who was this person?!
