Silence. That's how Nick liked it. No wind in the trees, no cars racing on the roads, no nothing. Silence was his friend. His only friend for that matter...
After Nick's husband, Aaron died of leukemia, Nick shut people out. No one would be able to get through to him. It was like a boundary line. People could try get passed it but to no avail be thrown back.
Nick looked over the balcony of his studio apartment he and Aaron once shared. Now, it was only him and pictures of the happy life he used to live. He scuffed his bare feet into the kitchen and switched the kettle on. Nick grabbed two cups out from the polished wooden cabinet and brought over the coffee and sugar that he had left out the previous morning. When the kettle switched off Nick poured the boiled water into each cup. The steam floated up into his face. He breathed it in, clearing his sinuses. When he finished stirring the three sugars into his coffee he brought one with him leaving the other behind. As Nick walked to the living room he saw along the way a picture of him and Aaron holding each other as they look up at the sky. He kissed the picture and said "I miss you, Aaron".
As the sun rose from behind the skyline of New York, Nick went to the door of the apartment and picked up the mail that his postman had left.
"Bills...spam...bills...insurance" Nick whispered to himself.
Nick couldn't believe the life he now lived. Dull and boring. And unfortunately...alone. Nick shook his head and downed the last of his coffee.
When it came to clothes Nick had no idea what to do with himself. Aaron always helped him with it. So when Nick got dressed that morning he put on a plain white t-shirt, a black jacket, black snug jeans and red converse. He knew he was going to have to go out that day. Food was low in the pantries. Plus he had to pay the bills he got that morning. So he got his keys he left on the table and walked to the door. As he opened the door he said to himself "Let's try and have a good day ok?"
