Monday morning it was, my first day in campus. I was both excited and frightened at the same time. It was my first time ever to be away from the place I called home and I knew nobody there; I was all alone, lost in the massive and very active crowd. Since I did not know where to begin, I figured out that I could never get lost if at all I had no idea where I was headed to, I decided to follow the crowd.
I went reading signs and building names until got to the registration square. Being the reporting date, the only exercise going on was payments of fees, activation of the Students portal and the allocation of hostels for those of us who desired to live inside the campus.
From childhood, I was that timid boy who was more of an introvert than an extrovert; I preferred being my own company and so I was not really an outgoing person.
When I got to the registration square, I did not know where to begin and I was too timid to ask hence I stood there observing what people were doing.
The more I observed, the more lost and confused I became. Luckily enough, I saw a guy I recognized and I asked him the procedure to the registration process.
I would not refer to him as a friend as such, but he was not a stranger to me and I was not a stranger to him; we knew each other from highschool though none of us knew the other's name.
After spending some time with him as he helped me do my registration, I discovered that he was a nice guy hence I decided to befriend him.
"Am sorry but I don't remember your name, would you kindly remind me your name please?" I asked him politely after we were done with the registration.
"My name is Jared but my friends call me Mike. I don't remember your name too, kindly remind me." He replied.
"I am George, others call me Haman while others call me Ham." I said timidly.
"So Ham, what's your plan for the rest of the day?" He asked.
"To be honest, I have no idea. Maybe sit somewhere under a tree and read a novel." I replied shyly.
Jared smiled broadly then he said;
"Come on Ham, this is campus. You should try and have fun around here; look at all these beautiful girls around you."
"Mike, I am not an outgoing person. All my life I have been friends with electronics and books; girls are not really my thing. Actually I had a girl friend once and I could not keep her because I did not know how to treat a lady." I replied calmly.
"There is a party tonight Ham, come with me and I promise you will love it. If you will not find it fun, I will never ask you to attend any other party again." Jared then suggested.
Besides being timid, I was a very shy guy and I could not stand a place with more than two girls, I would just start shaking and sweating.
"I think I am good Mike, I will just stay indoors and have some rest." I replied.
I did not want to tell him that I had never been to a party before because I did not want to look so naive. Nonetheless, he was a nice but stubborn guy, he promised to come and pick me up in my room at around 8pm.
