          — THERE WERE CERTAIN THINGS NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD VIRGINIA GLOYNE VOWED SHE WOULD NEVER DO. She told her mother so when she was a little girl: she would never dye her hair any shade other than her virgin platinum blonde, nor swear like some sailor in unnecessary circumstances. She would never act vulgarly, nor attend those smoke-filled underground speakeasies she'd read about in novels. She would never become a war wife, and certainly not some Marine officer's lapdog. Most of all, she would never do something just because other people were doing it.

She was a leader, not a follower — when the opportunity arose, she'd give men a run for their money, not chase them. Ironically, BILL SMITH hadn't ran track since high school. As her father said: typical, good-for-nothing, FIRST DIVISION MARINES. Over-paid, over-sexed, and over here: just as it says on the tin!

This is a fan fiction for HBO's The Pacific, and it is primarily focused on the television show, more specifically the period in which The First Marine Division were stationed in Melbourne, January 1943 – December 1943, an event true to real life that I have taken creative liberty with. Therefore not all events will be true to real life or the show, and many elements are based off of headcanons and simple observations.

* disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters that are mentioned in this story; I only own my original character(s), whom are people fabricated by me and not accurate to the history of WW2. I mean absolutely no disrespect to the actual heroes of the First Marine Division, as is just a story based off of the actors portrayals in the HBO series.
