I paced on the cold cemented floor. Up and down. My shoes pressed hard on the marble.
"We had a chance, and we shot it. One chance and we shot it. We blew it. We blew that shot." I was muttering to myself, my legs moving so fast I was afraid they would catch on fire. Steve sat on the floor next to me, watching me turn into a unhinged maniac. "You're repeating yourself, you know that?" He laughed, obviously enjoying himself. Well, of course he was. He had no idea he would be snapped in less than an hour.
Almost losing my shit, I went up in his face and yelled, "You're repeating yourself, YOU'RE REPEATING YOURSELF!!" I instantly revolted back into pacing, and he raised his eyebrows amusedly. "If you told me, maybe, why you dragged me out of the battle swearing that if I fidgeted once I would be blown across the universe, which is threatening, and, might I add, I don't think possible..."
"Threat still in emission," I grumbled, ignoring his brilliant grin. This man loved messing with me.
"I'm gonna go save Strange if you don't cut out this bullshit, and you know how I feel about wizards."
"Just a joke," Steve put up his arms innocently, "and you should laugh, cause it's funny, you know?"
"It's a joke, you better be laughing."
I stopped dead in my tracks.
The letter.
"STEVE," I almost screamed, causing the poor man to detonate from the ground, "WHERE IS SCOTT LANG RIGHT NOW."
"Scott? Man..." Steve scratched the back of his head, "I think, well, he is definitely on Earth right now, maybe the Quantum Realm..."
"WHERE ON EARTH." I was about to shit my pants from excitement.
"San Francisco, but I can't imagine why this is helpful with Thanos," Steve replied, biting his lip and turning his direction toward the flying donut. "JUST... Hey," I took his face in my hands and turned it towards my direction. His dark blue eyes latched onto mine.
"Don't worry about the stupid donut or Squidward or anyone from Thanos' ugly squad," I told him, my heart missing a few beats. "You have to trust me, Steve. I will tell you everything when we are back."
"Does this mean..." He asked quietly, "You aren't mad at me anymore?"
A reflection of the past fluttered between us, and I almost released his face in aversion. "I- Yes," I sighed. "I've missed you too much Steve, nothing is the same without you." He relaxed, his hardened eyes softening. "I've missed you too, and what I did, I knew you could never forgive..."
I put a finger on his lips, silencing him. The electric sparks shot from his soft graze to my fingertips. I bit my lip, hard. "It's okay. We can't worry about the past. Well, not yet anyway."
I offered him a hand to stand, and he took it wistfully. "Why do we need to worry about the past?"
"To save the future."
--------------------------------------------------------------
We snuck out of the building, behind guards, away from the mess. We danced around the war, where machines threated through the sky and screams strung a melody. We moved as one, slipping past our friends, avoiding my 2018 self (which was out there about to go big meanie mode).
The explosions configured in front of our faces. Flowers of fear bloomed about, and mass formations rusted at our presence. Steve whimpered in fear, and instinctively I grabbed his hand. He looked at me, at the hand, and then back at me.
