On the month of October, I usually spend my day writing, working at my day job, dosing myself with coffee, and try and take long walks for sparks of creativity and relief. One day I was walking until I saw a small, ripped cardboard box wide open. Intrigued, I investigated closer. Inside laid a small, little rabbit. I hunched down and held it in my arms.
"Hey there, cutie. Why are you in there?"
Of course it said absolutely nothing, but to me its eyes spoke words. I've been thinking about getting a pet since I got a bigger apartment, and thankfully they allow animals. I held the bunny in my arms and stopped by the closest pet store. I bought everything I could possibly need, and grabbed a carrier to keep it in. I didn't know what exactly to name it.
"We're here!" I announced. I plopped my bags beside the door and shut it tight. I set the carrier on my coffee table while I got the cage ready.
"BANG!"
......
"BANG!"
I jumped at the noise of the carrier jolting around. I laughed as I finished setting up the cage. "Hey there, buddy. Calm down, it's okay-Huh?"
To my surprise, the cage was knocked over and wide open with no bunny inside.
"How did this even happen? It was a sturdy cage!" Or so I thought.
I looked around in my apartment with a pounding heart. If something already happened to it, I really would be the worst pet owner ever.
Searching the place up and down, I had one place left, which was my room. The door was open, so I was sure he'd be in there.
Firstly, I crouched down and looked under my bed. I lifted the skirt of it, until I saw a foot.
"What the!?" I screamed. I scattered back until my head slammed itself into the wall. I watched in panic as a hand pulled over and peeked. That's when I saw two huge brown eyes staring at me.
But it wasn't a grown person. No, it was a child.
Wait, child?
He didn't say anything, just looked at me.
Obviously, I had to make conversation, right?
"Hello there, kiddo. Where did you come from?" I asked softly. His nose lightly scrunched up and tried running.
"No! Wait!" I yelped as I grabbing his wrist. Not too first, but enough to get a grip. He turned and that's when I noticed something extraordinary.
The child had black bunny ears along with a small bunny tail behind him. This kid... Was my pet?
"Okay, kid. Um, who are your parents?"
I sat him down on my couch and began asking him questions. I gave him some cookies I had on the counter to ease him. But he refused to answer anything I told him. Maybe he didn't speak english?
"You understand me... Right?"
The small boy looked up at me and lightly bobbed his head. I couldn't help but crack a small smile. In honestly, he was adorable. He had cute bambi-like eyes that would melt your heart if you saw them.
"Alright... You don't have to speak, but if you could please tell me if you belong to someone. At least one person? A parent, or a guardian...?"
He choked up.
I didn't want to force the poor kid to talk, so I took "No." for an answer.
"I'm... Sorry to hear about that. Can you tell me your name? Or... Write it maybe?"
He hopped from his seat to grab a pencil and paper from my desk. Fascinated, I anxiously watched him slowly write out the first few letters.
"Jun...Jungkook? That's how you say it, right?"
Jungkook nodded his head, and gave a small, yet sweet smile. I couldn't help but let out a chuckle and scratched his head lightly. "My name's Y/N. Nice to meet you."
So cute... Poor child...
Wait, but I'm not keeping him, right? I'm only twenty-five I can't be raising a child yet!
A small panic bubbled up inside me, but I remained calm. I carefully got up from my seat and looked at the extra bedroom. I had renovated it into more of a library, but it also had a daybed which he could lay on. I swiftly flicked on the lights and closed the curtains. Behind me scurried the small boy poking his head out from the door frame.
"Hey Jungkook, would you like to sleep here? If it's too dark, I can grab my nightlight."
He gave a peculiar look and investigated. His small hands softly stroked the bedding before plopping his weight onto it.
"How is it?" I asked unsurely.
His weight shifted from side to side. Seemingly satisfied, he gave a reassuring nod.
Thank God...
I helped him with finding a toothbrush and shower utensils to wash up before bed. After all was done, I tucked him in and wished him goodnight. He seemed to really enjoy that, most likely liking a mother figure in his life.
The thought of it made a rock full of heartache sink deep into my stomach. I knew I had no idea what I was going to do. I mean... He's a BUNNY and a YOUNG BOY? What am I going to do?
I probably should've kept on walking.
I let out a stressed sigh as I finally shut his door. I made myself some tea and sat on couch to think about it. I know I have to hide his bunny-like features before anyone tries to take him away. I know I had to take him shopping and get him changed out of his white gown he was wearing.
What have I gotten myself into.
If I was an asshole, I'd probably leave him somewhere... But, I can't do that...
Shit.
