     "Get up," "Jamie, get up,"
I hear my older brother, Avery, yelling for me to get up. Why? I always sleep in. Oh no. Then I realize. Today is the choosing. The day where they pick 30 children to go into the "death room," as Avery and my father call it. I think the whole town calls it that. My mother pulls my hair into a tight bun and puts on my purple dress. I feel queasy and I barely eat breakfast. Nobody speaks. Avery is pale because he doesn't want me to get picked. Even though I'm really worried about him. He entered five times because of the new rules of the towns. He's 18 and that means he has to enter 3 extra times. I shiver at the thought of him in the death room. No one knows what it looks like or what happens. The only things we see are the people who are chosen and the entering of the room. Then, I break down in tears, imaging Avery being slaughtered by soldiers or genetically modified animals. I look at Maria, my baby sister, who doesn't have to worry about the choosing, since she is only two. This is my first year entering. My mom goes over to me and hugs me tightly. I can't even imagine what she feels like. Her two children going into this scary situation. But she just has a straight face with sadness in her eyes. I wipe my tears away and wash my face, and we head off to the square where the choosing takes place. The whole way there it silent, only the birds singing a ominous song. I'm shaking with fear.
"Why do we have to do this?" I say. I already know why. I just always ask. It so the towns can bring down the population. Why children? You may ask, but no one really knows. When we get to the square there is a crowd and a big stage. There are security guards surrounding the crowd. Then, a lady with brown hair in a tight frizzy pony tail with scary looking eyes and really white teeth. Too white. Walks on stage. She coughs into the microphone to get everyone's attention and does this successfully.
"Welcome to the Choosing!" She says in a overly enthusiastic voice.
"I'm Teresa Magaony, and I will be helping your children in the Room!" Everyone claps.
"Now, lets start the Choosing!"
