19th August, senior year (Orchard Grove Boarding School) 7:35 am
"Late again", he said, staring out the large glass window.
"Very Sorry, Mr Forkle. I forgot where this room was, again", Sophie replied, plopping down next to him on the silk carpet. The pain swarmed at the careless movement. She winced. Forkle stayed creepily silent, not even blinking. Sophie took out the black ball that she found on her desk. "Did you give this to me?"
"Indeed," he replied, no tone in his voice. Sophie swallowed nervously.
"What does it do?" Sophie asked, putting the black glass ball carefully on the floor.
"You find out in time."
Sophie didn't say anything more but just stared at the ball, while her mentor stared out the window. What was he doing? It's so boring just sitting there. Just then a group of sevens walked past the room. The door wasn't closed so she could hear their noisy chatter loud and clear. The moment she heard such a loud sound, she gasped, clutching her head. Her goal was to not let anyone find out, but she couldn't help it.
"Have you been having headaches?"
"No," Sophie lied, surprised he knew. Was she acting weird for him to think that?
"Where does it hurt?" He said pressing on her temples. He finally faced her, blue eyes piercing hers.
"Everywhere," Sophie said deciding not to lie about the incredible pain in her head. A tear slipped down her cheek. If he was offering medication, she would take it. Anything to stop the pain.
His eyes filled with compassion as he probed her head a bit longer. "Here." He pulled a pair of headphones out of his long cloak, along with a small iPod. "This is my device. Put it on whenever your head starts to hurt, the music will help."
"Thank you," Sophie replied, happily taking the objects.
"Do you hear strange things? Like people's thoughts?" He asked. How did this person know!? It was crazy! And creepy...
"Yes! How do you know?" Sophie stared at him in shock.
"You will also find out in time."
Ugh. She frowned at him but didn't protest. Better off to just do what he says or else he might take back the music. Sophie just popped the headphones on and scanned the songs. There were about five, she played one randomly.
The music started, a gentle relaxing tune that made her want to fall asleep. The headache immediately ceased although there was still a slight throbbing. Mr Forkle said something, quietly, which Sophie was unable to catch through the music. She lifted one of the speakers on her ear.
"Sorry, could you repeat that please?"
Mr Forkle looked carefully at her. "Never mind..." he said quietly, turning away.
Before she could reply, the bell went. She stood slowly, swaying to the music that kept the bustling noise of the other students rushing out of classes from her head. She turned to wave at Mr Forkle but he was already meditating, facing the window again.
Sophie felt a tug in her brain like someone finally penetrating something. Mr Forkle's thoughts were rushing through her head, drowning out the music. None of it she could understand. It was like a foreign language or something.
Then she heard a low growl followed by a phrase that sounded strangely familiar.
You kids... the rest was blurred before she snapped out of his head. Sophie blinked, music drowning out the noises. She had stopped in the middle of a hallway people glaring at her for blocking the path. Some kids shrieked away. But most of them actually didn't look scared of her anymore. At least it wasn't like she had coodies. Still shocked that she had been able to control her brain power and heard Mr Forkle's thoughts, Sophie stumbled out of the way of the annoyed students.
She drew out the black ball she retrieved from the floor before she left and stared into it as she walked. A pair of loud girls walked past her shouting. "Have you seen how hot KEEFE SENCEN is?!" She shrieked. The name seemed to trigger the ball because it started shaking and rolling in her palm. The noise was making people's heads turn to her.
Sophie spotted a small cleaning room and jumped inside, shutting the door. The ball was buzzing loudly before flashing an image on one of its round sides. It was Keefe and Biana, standing in her dorm. They were talking softly, secretively.
"Sophie is one of us. I'm sure," Keefe said combing through his hair with his fingers.
"Keefe, you do realize that if you bring her back to the Elvin world and your wrong, we'll all be exposed and people will hunt us down!" Biana responded.
What? Elvin world? Sophie had only read about that in tales, but they weren't real.
"Look Biana, we can either talk to her and tell her the truth or kidnap her and make her hate us."
"Either way she's gonna hate us. We lied to her!"
"But if we tell her then she won't be as mad!"
"What about we don't tell her that she's a flippin' elf? That way she wouldn't hate us!"
An elf!? She wasn't an elf, she was born from human parents! She even had a sister! Biana said something about people hearing them and they lowered their voices. Keefe looked like he was trying to convince her, but Biana stayed silent.
"This all explains everything. Why she is blonde and why her parents and sister are brunettes. Why she is smarter than everyone. Why she is considered so weird!" Keefe said loudly, forgetting himself.
Sophie's breath hitched, indicating she was about to cry. He thought she was weird, just like everyone else.
"Can you explain why she has brown eyes? All elves have blue eyes..."
Keefe hesitated. "Alright. I swore not to tell anyone, but... Sophie went past my blocking yesterday."
"W-what!?"
"She did what only telepaths can do. That's what's making me so sure."
"I don't believe you."
Keefe sighed. "Look..."
Keefe stepped closer looking into her eyes. He put his hands on her shoulders and said a few quiet words. Biana wasn't listening though.
She was obviously too busy staring at his lips. Keefe stopped mid-sentence when he realized what was about to happen. Biana pressed her lips firmly against his, putting a hand behind his head so he couldn't pull away. Sophie's mouth dropped, her heart swirling with anger and jealousy.
Keefe looked like he wanted to pull away, but at the last second he gave in. Sophie watched them make out, the pain in her head returning. Her eyes were wet and puffy from crying. She was an elf. And they didn't tell her.
