The strap of the gig bag containing my acoustic guitar hung loosely crossed over my chest as I walked from my car to put the new instrument in my apartment. I leaned the guitar against the wall and sat on my couch when my phone 'ding'ed signaling a text from someone. When I unlocked my phone and looked at the message I saw it was from my friend Calum. He invited me to go to the bar with him and our friend Michael. I quickly replied yes and told him I was going to pick them up.
I'm really not the kind to go get wasted and bring home a new girl every night but I have to admit the local bar was one of my favorite places. By 9:34 I had parked and we were walking inside the crowded building full of underage teenagers, like myself, and the average 40 year-old who made some bad choices. Calum instantly laid eyes on a girl and ran towards her while michael walked straight to the nearest place to buy alcohol. I preferred to stay in the shadows, only coming out when I needed to.
To me there was something so wonderful about being alone in a crowded room. There was something so comforting about being able to see but unable to be seen. But tonight I wasn't alone. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a girl with long black, maybe? No, brown? No, blue hair. Shiny teal cascading down her back in natural waves. She was looking at me with the same look I was probably giving her.
She was gorgeous. Absolutely stunning. Her green eyes looked aqua because of her hair, and her simple black shorts and long sleeved, flowing white button up fit her perfectly. On a normal person blue hair would look odd, but she pulled it off perfectly. I walked up to her nervously and shakily said, "Hey, I'm Luke.". She looked at me for a moment before saying,
"I'm Elizabeth. But if you ever dare to call me that I'll slit your neck"
"What should I call you then?"
"Vide."
"Vide?"
"Yep."
"Why Vide?"
"It's short for l'appel du vide."
"L'a what?"
"L'appel du vide. It's the unexplainable desire to jump when on the edge of a cliff."
"Okay, Vide. Tell me about yourself."
She was so interesting. We talked for hours about nothing important and whatever came to mind. I decided that I wanted to be with her her. By this point we were both a bit drunk so I made the decision to tell her that. It was a big mistake on my part. She grabbed her purse, wrote something on a piece of paper, then left. The only thing I had from her was that paper. Hoping for a number, I looked at the note and my face fell when I found noting but ":-)" and an "it was nice meeting you."
Three days later I woke up and I still couldn't get her out of my mind. I wanted to hold her small waist in my arms. I just wanted to know more about her.
I was desperate for her so I googled her name, her real name. It's safe to say she is not the only Elizabeth in Los Angeles. Finally my idiotic self realized any social media she had wouldn't be under that name. Careful to not misspell anything I typed "l'appel du vide" into twitter and her face showed up right there as her icon. She had quite a sarcastic username, @mynameisnotliz. Good, Liz is my mom's name and I do not want to associate the two women.
After stalking her account for a while I discovered she liked a lot of the same bands as I do, her last name is Reid, and she lived with her brother who just-so-happened to be my olderbrother's best friend. I called Jack and asked him where Adam Reid lived, at first he was a bit suspicious but eventually gave in and texted me the address. I got in my car and drove there immediately. By the time I got there it was about one o'clock, on a Saturday, so I figured they'd all be home. I nervously walked up the steps to his porch and gave a half hearted knock. Part of me was hoping that no one would be home but the other part, the stronger part, was hoping she'd answer the door and give me some sort of sarcastic smirk like the first night we met.
