Rex felt claustrophobic in his large room.
There was an ache in his chest, It had been that way for a few days now. There wasn't anything physically wrong with him, Rex knew that. It was all mental. Being the person he was, he'd taken a guess that it had to do with the unfinished essay that was stopping him from applying to his dream school; to his future.
He'd stayed up just until the night sky began to get light again; starring at his screen- waiting for the answer to just come flooding out the way he needed it too. The way he'd practiced it in his head.
The longer he waited; the less likely it was for him to be accepted. The small voice in the back of his head screaming "Yale is waiting!" only made the ache worse.
There was a new feeling, one he wasn't sure about. One that made him confused. He used to think the farther he got away from here; the better. But now, he wasn't so sure. Like the ache was the idea that maybe leaving wasn't the greatest idea. When leaving was all he wanted before.
Rex wasn't a big city guy. The people were rude, the streets were filled and it felt claustrophobic. Within saying that, he wasn't the small town Lapush guy either; if you could call it that. He was surrounded by people who were stuck. There was a certain understanding about many on the Rez; it was the hill you were born on and the one you'll die on. You find your "one" on the Rez, you have kids on the Rez; you stay on the Rez.
While his parents didn't exactly follow those rules( his mother being of Korean descent), the mentality was still there. The idea of an ivy league had been drilled into his head before the ABC's had been, but there was a precedent that had been set; he would come back.
Rex watched the bubbles rise up to the top of his fish tank, the noise of the water refilling and going through the filter gave him a sense of comfort; almost like white noise. Rex thought maybe it was almost like living by a train. At first, you notice, it might even be a little annoying. Then, out of nowhere, it becomes part of your routine. You don't notice it the way you use too, it becomes a comfort you didn't know you needed.
"Rex? Honey?"His mother said, her small and slightly wrinkled hand making a soft knocking on his oak door.
"Hi ma" He smiled, his eyes closing slightly as he smiled at her. Rex and his mom were close. Even at the age of 18, when parents are gross and not a priority the way they use to be; she was still his best friend. Mostly because she was the exact opposite of him. While Rex stood around 6 feet; his mother was only 5'3(at the most). While Rex wasn't loud and over thought everything; his mother was loud and sometimes impulsive. His smile took up his whole face, her lips curled ever so lightly as it was instead her eyes that gave away her amusement.
"We were thinking of stopping by to see Harry and the Clearwaters, did you want to come? You've been up here since dinner last night" The boy's eyes went wide as they shifted over to his worn nightstand. 12:30pm read on his clock.
"You got lost again, didn't you?"Martha asked, a hum of amusement leaving her lips as she sat on the ledge of his bed, the soft caramel colour of his comforter ruffling up as she sat.
"Just trying to finish aplications,"He told her, his heart clutching with every word he spoke. He could hear his words come out spotty as if he had the hiccups or something.
"Im so proud of you baby. Honours again, you've made us so proud" His heart got even tighter as if his lungs had wrapped around the beating organ and squeezed the best they could.
"It means everything to hear you say that" This is why he was doing it. Why Yale was his dream. Rex couldn't describe the way his mother's eyes lit up when he talked about college, or about being a doctor. The idea of taking that away from her wasn't an option for him.
"I'll get dressed in just a second, wait for me?"Rex asked, earning another lip curling smile before she patted him on the knee and stood up.
"You're going to save the world someday my boy" Martha had said the saying for as long as Rex could remember, but this time his heart only clenched harder as his mother walked out of the door, shutting it with a small click behind her.
Picking up his laptop from beside him, his sat it on his lap and lightly pressed the pad of his fingers to the shinny black keys.
Medicine is my future because I want it. I want to be the one to heal people, to see the smile on peoples faces when I tell them they can go home. I want to be the one who comes up with new solutions, the one who could win awards and make medicine great again...
The Madden family made their way to the Clearwater residence, the idea of seeing Leah giving him some comfort after the feelings from earlier. Despite the age difference, after the whole Sam-Leah-Emily fiasco, the two had become closer as he found her crying by the water one day. While she threatened his whole lively hood on ever telling that story, it opened her up to show him a side not everyone gets to see.
Leah Clearwater was much more than her hard exterior.
"Thank god you're here, it was getting awkward"Leah's voice low voice squeaked to the tall boy, linking their arms together as he slow downed.
"Why? Clearwater family bonding again? There better be s'mores this time or I'm not staying" Rex told her, a small chuckle from deep in his stomach passing his lips.
"Sams minions are inside" Leah grumbled, the pair going slower than his parents who were now only steps away from the family's front door.
"Want me to take them out? I'll use my sniper skills" Rex asked, not for a second missing the smile that played on her lips for a second.
"Unfortunately video games don't count" Leah told him, causing Rex to raise his other arm towards his chest, his hand laying on top of his heart.
"Help! I've been wounded!" The war cry left his lips as closed his eyes. What he, and to be far Leah, weren't prepared for was the bolt of three men running out of the Clearwater's front door.
"What the hell do want?" Leah sneered, the grip on Rex's arm only tightening. The boy locked eyes with the one he'd ran into at school. Paul.
The black haired boy watched from their distance 4 feet away as Paul's cheeks turned a crimson red.
"We heard you yell, thought you were in trouble.. or something?" Paul told the two, his hand going to the back of his neck as his eyes fell right into Rex's dark chocolate brown ones.
Rex could physically feel it, the hurting in his chest and the clenching around his heart go away. It was the whole world went silent, even forgetting about the girl who's word were no longer audible.
There was only one thing Rex knew.
He didn't feel claustrophobic when looking at the boy across from him.
