I can feel the sweat soaking down my skin. I stand on the stage, nervously waiting for my queue. My costume itches as I watch the audience settle in. In 7th Grade I tried out for the school play, Into The Woods Jr. I also joined the drama club and made friends in the play. Students enjoy participating in a school play because, they can be the center of attention, they can learn how to be a better actor or actress, and they can also work with technology.
One reason you might want to be part of a play is, you can be the center of attention. Some students mess around and disrupt class because they want to be the center of attention. You know those kids, Class Clown, The Gossip, and that one kid who never does what the teacher says so he/she can look 'cool', If your one of those kids, you would be perfect for the star of a play. You draw attention like a horse in a coffee shop. Be the center of attention in a play, not in class when others are trying to work! The lead roles of the play will get there picture taken for the yearbook and there is also a cast picture. Sometimes schools will post cast pictures on the wall in schools so your face could be there for years to come. In a play you can make tons of new friends who have similar interests. You can be the center of attention when you are in a play.
Another reason you might want to be part of a play is, you can learn to be a better actor. You can get people skills from working with fellow actors and actresses. You can play lots of fun acting games like Space Jump or Lines From a Hat. Space Jump is a fun game where multiple kids get in a line and are given 3 nouns, one person, one place, and one thing, then one person goes in acts out a short skit then another person comes in and it's a whole different scene, you do that until you are out of people then do it in reverse. Lines From a Hat is a fun game where the audience writes random phrases down and put them in a hat then you draw one out and a few people go and try to act them out like if the paper said "What to say during the snap" then people would run up and act out what they would say during the snap. You can gain friendships and can get tips for getting over glossophobia, better known as stage fright. It's easier to talk in front of a group of friends, the in front of a huge crowd. There are rehearsals so you can get to know each other better and then practice in front of friends before you have to go in front of others. You can learn to be a better actor when you take part in a play.
The last reason to be a part of the play is, you could work with technology. So maybe being on stage or acting isn't your thing, but that doesn't mean you can't be a part of the play! Sure Actors get most of the compliments and praise but tech crew is who really makes the magic happen. In tech crew there are three main areas Lights, Sound, and Props. With Props you would make art pieces for the actors to work with, like a painted cardboard background. In a middle school or high school play the costumes were probably purchased from like party city or something but in a professional play people would make the costumes. With sound it's probably not as used in middle and high school plays but in a professional play, the people in charge of sound would make sure the actors microphones were on and they would take care of music. In some plays they would send a queue for musicians to play music. In a middle school or high school play you would probably just put on the music at the right time but this could be good for future plays. In Lights You dim and Brighten lights, Find the right shade and color for them to be at certain moments, like in The Lion King when Simba goes into the hyenas land the lights dim and go red. You would make the spotlight follow actors. For some young actors doing Tech Crew would be enjoyable and well worth joining the play.
No matter what part you play, Being in a play would look great on your resume for college, a job, or even just joining another play. Whether you're trying to be the center of attention, getting acting tips, or your working with technology, Students enjoy being in a school play. It's almost time, butterflies fly around in my stomach as I wait. My name is called, I take a deep breath, and then I step on Stage. I feel the audience's eyes watching me, but while it felt like black holes from the wings, now, on stage, it feels like a wonderful embrace. This is how it feels to be in a play.
