Chapter 1
I sat quietly in my usual spot at the cafeteria. The spot I knew would definitely ensure me a clear view of her. Her gorgeous burning red hair, pale green eyes, smooth porcelain white skin… And how could I forget, the brightest and shiniest smile that would dazzle me to death.
I sighed to myself, knowing that average me is incapable of capturing her heart. She had half the school’s boys eyeing over her, undressing her in their minds, without a doubt.
I winced at their thoughts, but knowing I’m nowhere better. Come on, she does have a really curvy body, and gorgeous legs. However, no one else knows her like I do. No one enjoys knowing her like I do.
They just want to get into her pants, or rather, her skirt. But I know, she’s not like that. She’s not like the other airheads that attend our school. She’s the cutest nerd that I’ve set my eyes on.
Sadly, I moved over to get my regular lunch, a sandwich. Taking note to avoid any eye contact, I walked back to my usual spot. But today, I bumped into someone. Snapping me out of the focus I was having on the cafeteria tiles, into the pale green eyes of her. Emily Ross.
“I-I-I’m sorry…” I muttered clumsily, as I had knocked over her soup and some rice.
“It’s okay, erm…” She looked at me expectantly, with a frown on her pretty face, while I just stood there gapping at her.
“Buzz off, Mr Nobody!” A high-pitched voice came from behind me. Gloria Sparks. She went forward and cleaned Emily up.
“Em, let’s go. He's staring at you like you're a piece of meat.” Gloria said that with a wrinkle of her nose.
They turned around and left.
I looked down on my sandwich, feeling stupid from my idiotic behavior in front of her. I swear I could have smacked myself there and then for standing right there like a piece of wood and not helping her clean up.
An idiot, I am. Losing my appetite, I dropped my sandwich into the trashcan and proceeded to walk out the cafeteria.
As I walked off a discreet corner out of the cafeteria, I heard the girls starting to gush excitedly.
I turned in direction of where the attention is going, and of course, who else but my best friend, Matthew Anders.
Matt has been my best friend for a really long time, even before entering high school. He was interested in sports, taking no much interests in studying. He built up his physique, and his mum had a stylist to turn Matt into the stud he currently is. Not many people know about this though, as he felt embarrassed that his “hotness” wasn’t inborn, as he put it.
I hastened out of the cafeteria. We’re still best friends of course, but if he’d seen me, he would has asked me to hang out at the same table, he’s good like that. But then again, he had to care about his rep. What good would it do him if a nobody like me started hanging out with the jocks?

Science. Mr Hastings continued his ramble on the subject, oblivious to the lack of attention from the class, with groups doing their own stuff.
I was seated about 2 places diagonally behind Emily Ross. Her red hair seemed to burn even brighter and looks amazing under the sunlight that was peering into our classroom. I sat there, enchanted.
TAP TAP! Mr Hastings tapped loudly on the board, ushering the class into immediate silence. Wow, who knew he would do such a thing?
“As I’ve said earlier, I will be pairing you up for a mini science project and experiment. No swapping of partners, and this project is to be completed in 3 weeks.” Mr Hastings said, paying no attention to the various sounds of rejections coming from the classroom. "It will contribute to your end of year result." Silence came once again.
He proceeded to pair the class up. I stared out of the window, feeling bored.
“Mason Ronalds, and Emily Ross.”
My ear pricked up hearing the pairing. I did a mini dance of excitement internally, but kept my eyes set on the window. I could felt my heart beating quicker and quicker. I just hope my face would show nothing.
When I finally turned around I saw her seated beside me, absentmindedly looking at her nails and I could tell, she wasn’t excited about the pairing as I was. I looked around the class, trying to find Matt, hoping to get a boost of confidence from him.
He was paired with a hot blonde, who was flirting with him as though the project was about procreating with the partner. She leaned in so close to him, her chest rubbing his arm. Boy, she is such a slut.
Of course, Matt paid no attention to her, he was used to all the flirting, the girls that threw themselves to him time and time again. He knew that as well. He looked bored, throwing in nods to acknowledge the blonde. Soon he turned over to me, giving me a wink. I guess that’s the boost I needed.
I took a deep breath, and proceeded to walk over to Emily.
