A/N: A short story with a little bit of lgbt characters. Hope you like it as much as I liked writing it! This story is also featured on my tumblr page creative-journal-of-a-fangirl X Myrthe
Driving back from work was the only time of the day where I really had time to think. In the morning I was usually to sleepy and at home I was always busy preparing my classes to teach the next day and avoiding the abusive piece of shit that calls himself my boyfriend. I guess at some point I loved him but that feeling really was long gone. I wanted to leave him, and I tried, I was tired of the beatings and the rape, but every time I tried to leave he would figure it out and the beatings would just get worse. I couldn’t get out of this situation, at least not alive I guess.
I focused on the road in front of me and watched the rain splatter onto my windows, the street lighting dimly glowing through the blurry vision I had. There was no one in the streets, but who would be with this weather? I stopped at a traffic light and stared out of the window. Underneath a street light a couple meters away I saw someone, a girl, trying to hitch-hike as the cars just passed by letting her get soaked in the rain. I felt bad for her, how she was standing there with her shoulders down and a hoodie wrapped tightly around her body. The hood covered part of her soaked hair and in her hands was a sign saying ‘’Anywhere’ , next to her feet was a single backpack, the only thing she took with her I guess. It was a sad sight, a girl, all alone in the dark with the rain crashing down on her.
As soon as the traffic light turned green I drove over to het and stopped the car, letting her climb in next to me. ‘’H-Hi’’ She shivered but she gave me a small grateful smile, I turned up the heat and handed her my own hoodie ‘’Here, take this’’ I said. ‘’Thanks’’ She said and changed into it. I started the car again and for a couple of minutes we drove in silence, the houses passing us by. Then I realized I had no idea where she was supposed to go ‘’Where do you need to go?’’ I asked her, breaking the silence. She sighed ‘’As far away as possible.’’ She sounded sad and I really didn’t want to question her but my curiosity took over ‘’Why?’’ I asked her, quickly glancing over. She looked up her eyes scanning the road in front of her ‘’My parents kicked me out when the found out I was gay, they told me I was a disgrace and that they never wanted to see me again. They gave me an hour to pack and that was it’’ She smiled sadly. I tried to comfort her by putting my hand on her thigh, i felt a strange warm feeling spread through my body. It has been long since I last felt that way. I wanted to help her, bring her home with me and let her stay there. But I couldn’t. My home situation was way to messed up and I didn’t even want to be there myself, why would she?
“Hey, I didn’t quite catch your name’’ I heard her say besides me, i turned to face her ‘’I’m Devon’ I told her with a smile, she smiled back at me and only now I noticed how beautiful she was, how safe I felt around her. ‘’I’m Ashton’’ She told me, ‘’And thank you’’ I squeezed her thigh lightly and in that moment I made a decision ‘’Ashton?’’ I asked, she was quiet for a second ‘’Yes?’’ She then asked, ‘’Run away with me?’’ I looked at her hopefully. She smiled again ‘’Always’’
We drove for another hour just chatting and getting to know each other, but honestly, it felt like I had known her forever. We passed a bridge with a massive river flowing underneath, i stopped the car and grabbed my phone sending a message to a certain person ‘’We’re over’’ it said. ‘’What are you doing Ashton asked, I looked at her and smiled ‘’Something I should have done a long time ago’’ I got out of the car and threw my phone in the river as far away as possible. Ashton stood behind me wrapping her arms around my waist ‘’Leaving some stuff behind?’’ She asked, I turned around ‘’Yes’’ I whispered and then I kissed her. And for the first time in forever I remembered how love felt. ‘’Run away with me?’’ I asked again as she entwined our hands flashing me another smile ‘’Always’’
