CHAPTER TWO

Finley had woken up early that morning to feed Tom and get ready for class. Kids were still trying to convince themselves to get out of bed. Finley liked her robes with a blue interior. She was even looking forward to autumn to wear her Ravenclaw scarf. Hogwarts was without a doubt the strangest place Finley had ever been, but maybe that's what made it seem like the greatest place ever to her.

Meanwhile, Dean and Seamus had woken up late and rushed to put on their ties and lace up their shoes. Seamus gathered up his books and Dean made sure he had his wand before they went downstairs to get breakfast. The pair of boys were seen jogging down the changing staircases and reaching dead ends just to get to the lower levels. A few fifth years made snide remarks from the staircases and others rolled their eyes at the hectic 11 year olds.

When they arrived at the Great Hall, Finley was already waiting at the Gryffindor table fixing up her pieces of parchment and pens. She had already helped herself to toast and eggs as well as a cup pumpkin juice which was surprisingly refreshing. Dean and Seamus seated themselves across from her and began to put food on their plates.

"Class starts in a few minutes, you know," Finley reminded the two boys trying to catch their breath while stacking pancakes on their plates.

"The staircases are a nightmare," Seamus said. "I think I lost ten pounds last night just by walking up all those steps. I'm probably gonna lose all feeling in my feet by the end of this year."

"I'm used to walking up stairs, but not like this," Finley explained. "They should have some form of getting around, like lifts. Muggles have them in some schools."

"Why would anyone want to have the same things as muggles?" a random girl near them blurted out.

Finley turned around the boys looked up at the girl. She had short, dark brown hair and fair skin. The girl was wearing a green tie, obviously Slytherin. The girl was definitely their age, but Finley didn't recall seeing her being sorted last night. She was crossing her arms at Finley and had a look of disgust on her face by what the Ravenclaw girl said.

"Magic and muggles shouldn't mix. I would despise attending this place if it had us acting like muggles."

Finley's thick eyebrows arched and felt completely offended. She stood up from her seat and stared at the Slytherin girl.

"What's so wrong with muggles?" Finley questioned.

"I don't feel like it needs explaining," the girl said. "I'm Pansy Parkinson. Who are you anyway?"

"Finley, Finley Warren."

"Mudblood, I bet," Pansy smirked.

"Don't call her that," Seamus said immediately.

Finley and Dean looked at Seamus. They both wondered what "Mudblood" meant and what made Seamus so quick to tell Pansy not to say it. Finley looked back at Pansy who was staring down Seamus.

"I'll do what I want, not what a blood traitor like yourself tells me to do."

And with that, Pansy walked off, her head held high and small, smug smirk on her thin lips.

The three of them sat back down and continued to eat their breakfast. They all sat in silence. Finley was furious with what Pansy said about muggles. Seamus felt bad for Finley, even Dean despite the fact that the Slytherin girl had said nothing to him. Dean was in need of answers. Answers to why Pansy was like that and why muggles were supposedly so bad.

"Seamus," Dean began. "What's a Mudblood?"

Seamus didn't look up from his plate of hash browns and sausage links. "Just, don't worry about it," was all the small Irish boy would say about the word.
