Ian's POV
I'm walking out of my apartment complex and making my way to my car when I see him. There's a boy standing against the side of the building looking kind of lost. He's got jet black hair and a pair of shiny black horns coming out of the top of his head. He's wearing a black t-shirt ,black jeans and a black necklace with a black tooth pendant hanging from the chain in the center of his chest. I wasn't aware someone could wear so much black at once. Oh, and he wasn't wearing any shoes... I won't judge. I walk up to him.
"Hey! You look new here." I say and look down a his bear feet, "And you're not wearing shoes, but that's cool. I'm alright with naturalists."
"I just don't like shoes..." he says, monotonously.
"Okay." I shrug, "I'm Ian."
I hold out my hand for him to shake. He's hesitant.
"Uh.., umm..." he stutters.
"C'mon, shake it!" I say, stretching my hand more.
His arms uncross from his chest and both kind of extend towards me, awkwardly. I grab his right hand and shake it.
"Wait!" he yells right as I grab his hand, "Crap..."
"What?" I look at him confused, his hand still grasped in mine, "Or not... Was I not supposed to do that?"
I'm slightly alarmed and very confused. His face twists into a combination of fear, regret and exasperation.
"Uhh, you see these horns up here?" he asks, gesturing to the sleek black horns on his head.
"Yeah?" I question.
"Yeah, uh, you see these symbols on our hands?" he unclasps our hands and holds them up.
I look at our palms and see a strange black symbol that was definitely not there before. I stare at it for a second, confused, then look back up at him, smiling.
"Yeah, cool!" I say, excitedly.
He laughs nervously and a little annoyed.
"I'm a demon." he states, flatly.
"I'm a human." I shrug.
I knew that demons existed in this world, thought I had never met one. I'm accepting of everyone, so I didn't question it.
"We're contracted to each other." he deadpans.
"What does that mean?" I ask.
"I'm basically yours and your basically mine." he explains.
His expression is annoyed but I'm good at reading people. I see the underlines of fear in his face.
"That's awesome! I've always wanted a roommate!" I say excitedly, "Come on!"
I start dragging him up to my apartment.
"No! That's not how- Help!" I stutters as I pull him by the hand.
To him, I probably seem like an idiot. I'm not. Sure, I act like a dork but really, I'm good at reading people, being able to tell their emotions just by looking at them. When I saw this boy, standing against the building, I saw confusion, loneliness, fear, and skepticism. I was curious. I wanted to help. Obviously I didn't know he was a demon at the time, but whatever. Now we're contracted, whatever that means, and I've been looking for a roommate, so why not?
We make it back up to my apartment.
"Ready for the grand tour?" I ask, "Oh, and I didn't catch your name."
"Hunter." he says.
"Well, Hunter," I say, trying it out, "Welcome home."
Hunter's POV
Those words struck a cord with me. I'm not sure why. This idiot, who I just met about five minutes ago, is dragging me through the now open door of his apartment. I struggle against his grip to no avail. He's stronger then he looks.
"No- Stop- I don't want to- Oh my god-" I squirm, trying to get away.
He stops in a hallway and slings an arm around my shoulders. I stiffen then try to shrink away from his touch, although it doesn't do much to get him off me. His grip is still firm.
"Alright okay, so," he starts explaining, "Down the hall and to the right is my room. Down the hall and to the left is the bathroom. And if you look out the window, there's a bird. It's name is JJ, it's not very talkative, but it loves organic bird see. Only organic bird seed. And then, a little ways this way," he points, pulling me closer into his side. I flinch away again, "is the kitchen. You can feel free to have anything you want in there, I'm totally fine with it-"
"Hey!" I cut him off, exasperated, and grab his hand, "Do you see these symbols on our hands?"
"Yeah, they're cool and I like them." he says.
"Yeah, it means we're contracted to each other."
"Yeah." he nods.
"We're not friends, and not roommates!" I say and finally yank myself from his grip.
"But you said that I was yours and you we mine." he says, confused but still optimistic, "So, roommates."
"I made a contract with you by accident because the is the hand I make contracts with." I hold out the hand that he shook, only a few minutes earlier.
"Oh." he says and his face falls a bit but his smile is back in a split second. There's a pause, "So, not roommates, but roommates. Right?"
I rest my head in my hand.
I feel a pressure on the tip of my horn and glance up, only moving my eyes. He poked the tip of my horn!! Oh god help me...
"You want the guest room?" he asks after the pause and points down the hall.
I just look at him and sigh.
"Sure..."
