Chapter 2

"the village against the Garner's. Where has this come from?" My mother questions exasperated.

"read the article." I lower my head already knowing what it said. Asa gave me the liberty of shouting it after me when I was walking home through a field behind his land.

She skims through it. "who told them this?"

"maybe one of the workers said something, but how would they even know."

"s probably the Garner's." I mutter to myself.

"they haven't been here long enough to have found that out. It has to have been one of the workers, maybe Peter," he suggests, "he could see our finances when he's in the office."

"wouldn't we see that it's been moved?"

"do you watch the book that closely?! No I didn't think so, you never pay attention to anything! It's got to have been him."

I lean back in my chair having finished my dinner, hy head leaning on my hand. My mum pats the bottom of my arm and gives me a look that says "get your elbow of the table." I sit up again zoning out of their conversation and twirl my spoon around. "Don't you have running today?"

I look up "uhh yeah, in like half an hour. Should I start leaving?"

"You still do that?" my dad finally looks up at me, I nod in response. "Oh nice, yeah sure go. Take the plates."

I jam my feet into my shoes and step outside closing the door behind me not facing it. I look up and down the empty street before heading left.

"How's the whole running thing going?" Will laughs. I look up at him snorting and throw him a peace sign. "I might as well be sonic at this point."

"I could picture you as sonic." He states.

I give him a blank stare before snorting out a half laugh, "what?"

"Yeah, no clothes, with blue fur everywhere and phat ass shoes."

"That's... kinda gay to be honest." I tell him.

I stand back scratching the back of neck as he replies, "a little bit yeah."

"Did you want to imagine that?"

"no"

"No homo then."

"It's not gay if you say no homo, no matter if it was an accident or planned. We always no homo."

"That sentence doesn't make this better mate, so like no homo again."

"Oh look it's Lake, how's the wine growing?" he mocks my name.

I ignore him and turn down the road. "Well that's rude! Is the forest land not good to grow on?" I clench my jaw and stop walking. "Touchy subject, are you off to dehome some more wildlife?" I hear him standing behind me. "You're killing the habita-"

And before I know it I have swiveled around and punched him. Square on the right cheek, skimming his nose.

He snaps his head away holding his face looking shocked.

I hear gasps around me and freeze my eyes wide, I pull my hands to my body and just blink at him.

I reach my hand out to try and apologise but he moves away suddenly and walks off down the back of a row of gardens his head hung low. "No wait I'm sorry, I wasn't thinking!" I call after him trying to chase him down. "Asa I'm sorry don't tell anyone." He doesn't stop until I pull him back by his arm. He spins around and pushes back into the wall of a nearby house. I stumble hard into the brick and hit my shoulder painfully. "I'm sorr-"

"Do you know what you've just done?" He interrogate me with one finger in my face and the other hand keeping my injured shoulder pressed against the wall. I shake my head against the brick staying silent. He leans close to me so I can feel his breath on me, both hands now keeping me against the wall. "You've just made everything worse for yourself, do you think you hitting one of the family they actually like was a good idea?"

I sheepishly shrug my shoulders and say, "I just reacted, I didn't think it through."

He rolls his eyes at my stupidity. "No you really didn't," he trails off, "you really didn't" he looks at my lips then back into my eyes before leaning in fully and planting his onto mine.

This one was different to the last one, there was more energy. He held me in place as began to move his lips against mine. My eyes shut on their own and I try to kiss back.
