The sweet smell of pizza filled my lungs as I walked into the cafeteria. Everywhere I looked there were people talking and laughing with their small groups of friends. I looked around, brown bag lunch in hand, for my own group. I passed by the jocks and the cheerleaders and the nerds. Then I spotted them. I could see that brown mess of curls straight across the room. He was sitting facing a tall, thin brunette haired boy. I had never seen him before, perhaps he was new? I walked over to the table and ruffled the exposed curls on Harry's head.

"Hey! Don't mess with the curls. It's my signature," he warned with a hint of a flirty smile.

"My apologies Harold, but I didn't know you were out to impress today. I take it he caught your fancy though?" I asked the new kid as I took my usual seat beside Harry.

"I was just about to say the same to you," the tall boy retaliated. I felt my eyes go wide and my cheeks grow hotter. I covered my mouth with my hand to hide my laughter. He really must be new. "I'm Will by the way," he continued. "And no, I'm not new, you're just unobservant."

I was slightly taken aback by this Will character's attitude, however I found it kind of attractive: he was forthright and cheeky. In many ways he reminded me of Harry. It figures that I would now have to deal with two of them. I avoided looking back at Will as I began to unwrap my ham and cheese sandwich. I took a bite and restarted the conversation.

"So, you guys hear about the dance this Friday? It's some sort of homecoming thing. I hear they go all out, live music and food. Anyone interested?" I asked in the hopes that either one would be free to take me.

I had been in school for about a month now, but my social standing in school was non-existent. It wasn't that I was a loser or anything; I was best friends with one of the most popular people here. I just couldn't find a way to connect with people on more than an acquaintance basis. I felt so alone, and attending one of the biggest parties of the year solo was not something that was high on my priority list.

I scanned the faces of the boys around me. Will looked as though he was going to die laughing. His lips were quivering and his face was beginning to turn a lovely shade of rose. Needless to say, Will thought it was a joke. Although I wasn't one to participate in the whole school spirit thing, I did enjoy a good party.

Harry's face looked a bit less stupefied than that of his friend. I figured this was my best shot.

"Please, please, please, please, please Harry will you take me?" I took his hand between my own and batted my eyelashes in an attempt to persuade him. "I'll be your best friend," I added for good measure.

"You already are my best friend, which is why I know you would never ask me to attend something so superficial."

Harry always had a thing against parties. He thought of them as a way to get a bunch of people into a room and get drunk and dance; nothing too special and definitely not the way he cared to spend a night.

"But Harry, there will be lots of pretty girls there. Jeanette and Heather were talking about it earlier. I know you fancy them, so no point in hiding your excitement," I argued as I insinuated his lower region.

Harry had always had a thing for the ladies, and let's face it, they always had a thing for him too. It was his weakness, and as his best friend I was able to shamelessly use it against him.
