The frozen air bit at Nell as she carefully walked over the icy sidewalk to school. She hated the winter, always getting frostbitten because her mum never bought her a winter coat or anything. Oh, how she hated her mum.
As she was coming up to the school, a kid had pushed her from behind, making her slip backwards and falling to the ground hard on her back. Her books went sliding across slick ice.
If only her best friend hadn’t still been on winter vacation...he’d surely help Nell out.
But she was alone. No one would help her.
“I need you Brent…” she whispered out to her best friend, though she knew he wouldn’t hear her.
She carefully helped herself up, and went to gather the scattered school supplies.
Nell sat in the back of her Health class, her last class, half-listening to what her teacher, Mr. Benner had to say. She was drawing her pictures of anime characters in her sketchbook.
“Nell,” Mr. Benner called. Nell’s head shot up. “Can you tell me three things that causes any mental health disorder?” he asked.
Nell just looked around. “Uhh…” she mumbled. “I-I don’t know…”
“Nell, I suggest you pay attention. Put that book away.”
Nell could hear snickers of her peers. They liked it when she got in trouble.
She walked home, the frozen air nipping at her. She violently shivered.
Nell arrived home finally, being unwelcomed by her mother. She was drunk on whiskey.
“There you are!” she yelled. Nell’s mum grabbed her by the back of her collar, and dragged her to her room.
“Clean up! I don’t wanna see you until I see this room spotless!”
Nell’s mum threw her into her room, but she caught herself at her feet.
So Nell cleaned her room, everything placed where it should go. But she never came out of her room. She was busy emailing Brent, who was in Florida right now.
Nell : I really miss you :(
Brent : I miss you too. But I’ll be back in a week, okay?
Nell : Okay… well I have to go. I gotta get to sleep or mum will kill me.
Brent : Alright, well goodnight Nellie. Love ya.
Nell : Love ya too.
But Nell couldn’t sleep at all. She needed Brent there, or at least somebody.
That’s when she started to cry. Nell ended up crying to sleep that night. Nightmares had consumed her mind.
Nell arrived at school the next morning, the ice melted from salt that the janitor had spread out along the sidewalk. After walking in through the doors, she made her way up the stairs to the second floor to get to her first class.
As she paced down the hall to Science, someone tripped her. It was Lexy, Nell’s worst rival. Her supplies went scattering everywhere, and she was left to pick them up herself as everyone giggled and whispered to each other. Nell tried not to cry, for it would only make everyone laugh more.
The bell rang, and everyone rushed to class. Nell was still gathering her things. She ran to Science, unbelieving how late she’d be.
“Nell.” her teacher said as she raced in. “You’re late.” he said as he marked her tardy.
