One. Two. Three. Four.
I stared at the clock, time seemed to be passing at an all time slow.
It was 11:30, I still had a half hour to go until my shift was over. Aggravated, I gave up trying to count the seconds, knowing it just made time go by even slower. So instead, I pulled out the book I always carried around in my bag, "To Kill a Mockingbird", and began to read where I left off.
It was my favorite book, and I read it constantly. Especially on nights like tonight, when the small gas station's silence was making me insane.
I just started this job, a week or two ago. It wasn't a great job, I just needed an easy way to help my family pay for college. What sucked was how dull it really was. My shift was from 8pm to 12am, and by around that time no one really stopped in gas stations to grab a bag of chips. But, it worked for me. I was in college studying English all day, and my nights were spent here.
I know, my social life is really at its peak. In all honesty, nothing extraordinary really ever happens in my life.
Which is why, here I am; 11:30 on a Friday night, reading a book at a gas station. I wish something would happen, anything, to spice up this night at least just a little.
Right on cue with my mindless and irrelevant thoughts, the bell rang, indicating someone was walking in the store. I looked up startled when I heard yelling.
"Put you're fucking hands up, you're being robbed!" It was four people, and by the looks of it they were girls, each sporting there own ski mask and black hoodie.
The other girls laughed with the first girl, who held a gun over the counter.
I immediately dropped my book, putting my hands in the air.
"Good girl," The girl with the gun said. She was tall, intimidating , and by the looks of it seemed to be in charge. I could see her vibrant green eyes, dilated and bloodshot.
The other three girls stood behind here, nervously glancing around.
"Here," I shakily went to dig in my pocket, going to get the key for the cash register.
"Hey!" The girl with the gun screamed, pointing the gun at my face.
I immediately pulled back, putting my hands back in the air.
"I-I was going to give you the key to the cash-cash register." I stuttered nervously, glancing back and forth between the girls.
I noticed one short girl fidgeting anxiously, pacing back and forth. She looked nervous and was avoiding any eye contact. We locked eyes, but she looked away quickly. "Ally," The green eyed bitch yelled, tossing the gun to her, "Get the key from her."
Ally? Or whatever her name is stared uncertainly at the gun in her hands, but the other girls gave her a rough shove towards me. She shakily held the gun to my face, "Common," She spoke softly at first, but the other girls scolded her, "Stop being a little bitch!" They called from behind, watching with amusement.
She gulped, and mouthed and 'I'm sorry' that only I saw. "Move!" She yelled more aggressively, shoving the gun at me.
I walked with my hands up, around the counter so that I was facing the girls. She grabbed my arm, and although she was smaller then me, managed to pin my face against the wall and held the gun against my back. "Now, which pocket is the key in?" One of the girls asked from behind me.
"Left back pocket," I mumbled with my cheek against the wall.
"Ally!-" I heard that familiar husky voice yell from behind, "I'll take it from here."
Ally pulled away, giving me a slight apologetic rub on the shoulder that only I felt. I felt a wave of relief knowing at least one of them had a heart.
That feeling was soon replaced as I was pushed against the wall roughly. I didn't even have to look to know who it was that was restraining me.
I felt the girl who had me pinned against the wall reach into my packet pocket, digging in in search of the key.
I don't think she realized this, but she was basically groping me, spending an unnecessary amount of time fishing around in my back pocket.
When she pulled in out, she whispered against my ear, "Found it." I shivered at her warm breath down my neck, but soon the feeling was gone, and she roughly grabbed my arm.
Ouch, I did not like her! I winced in pain as the "leader" threw me roughly to the floor.
"L," One of the girls who was just sort of standing there the whole time said, scolding her. "L", I guess I'll call her, looked back and rolled her eyes, laughing. "So she'll have a bruise or two, we could kill her, this is nothing."
I stayed on the floor, petrified.
"Mani, get the money then let's get out of here." L tossed the key to one of the girls, who then proceeded to empty out the cash register.
"My boss is gonna kill me," I muttered, more to myself then anyone.
L looked down at me, grinning. "Just be lucky we didn't sweetie."
"Let's roll," One of the girls said.
Right when L got distracted, I decided to be a complete and total idiot. I wasn't about to let these girls get away, at least without being able to identity them.
I sprung up, and I swear time went in slow motion. I launched myself at L, knocking the gun out of her hands. I tried to fight her, but once she realized what was going on, she shifted her weight and pulled me to the ground. She brought a fist to my stomach, making me wince in pain. At one last attempt, I grabbed at the ski mask on her face, pulling it off her.
I locked eyes with a pair of emerald eyes and I knew I was screwed. "Now you know me," She said through gritted teeth, "That was a bad move... Which leaves me with two options. I put this bullet through your head or you come with us." She stood up, leaving me laying on the floor still clutching my stomach.
I made an attempt to get up, slowly. "Where are we going?" I said, trying to calm myself.
L smiled, and just nodded for the door, "Why don't we find out?"
And with that, I left.
Left the quiet, boring gas station, left the safety of my book, left my boring, un eventful life; and followed four criminals out the door.
