Pin drop silence descended on the group before the voice of the most annoying twat said, "You know there's this really famous pig called Arnold who" I stuffed the dirty sock in his mouth. Murphy spat it back out and he looked ready to murder me, but Tommy stood in front of me before he had a chance to come closer.

"Figures, the she-devil has a pet." Murphy looked at the both us, scoffing before he went to stand behind Warren.

I felt affronted. True, stuffing a sock in his mouth wasn't the nicest thing I've done, but I just knew that he was going to say something either insensitive or dumb, or both. If anything, I saved him from any further social humiliation. He should thank me.

I decided to ignore him and turn my attention back to the crying girl. She sounded so broken and hurt that I wanted nothing more than to hide her somewhere and keep her safe. The poor thing has been through so much already and I wanted nothing more than to find this Tobias guy and chop off his balls and feed it to him.

Manipulated and forced into cannibalism, that's the kind of crazy that would make anyone lose themselves. I reached out to her and she flinched away. I felt a lump on my throat. Damn, now I felt like crying too.

I untied her roped and pulled her in my lap for a hug, whispering words of comfort and rubbing her back. This reminded me of a scene from long back, but it was with a boy broken with grief.

"It's all right Cassandra, you did what you had to do to survive. You're a very brave person and I don't think of you any differently. It's all right, I'll look after you. You won't have to go back there. I'll keep you safe." I said, placing my forehead on hers. She had to know that I was serious and that I meant every word—I will keep her safe.

"Thank you." She sobbed out and kissed my cheek. I felt my face heat up, I didn't expect that.

"Once you're done making out can we please go? Trying to save the whole world here folks, not make a telenovela." I glared at Murphy, wanting nothing more than to choke him with the same damn sock.

"Geez Murphy, let the girls have their moment," Doc said as he dragged the turd face away.

"She's coming with us, right Garnett?" I looked up at him, praying he said yes. I didn't want to leave the group yet, but I will if they decide against letting Cassandra stay.

"We don't leave anyone behind," Garnett said, smiling and I returned it. The girl in my arms cried louder, this time out of happiness.

"Yeah. Plus, us girls got to stick together." Addy winked at the both at us and never before had I felt so grateful for the red-haired beauty. Warren helped us both stand up before saying, "Well, now that's sorted out, we still need to find gas if we want to get to California."

California? Why did they need to get there so badly? I decided to ask them later when there weren't snitches like Travis nearby. Speaking of Travis, I crouched next to him and he flinched back. Good, he's still scared silly.

"You wouldn't happen to know any other way we can find gas that's closer hm?" I said as I gave him an eye-smile. He fervently shook his head and I inched closer to his face, staring into his eyes for any deceit.

"Please don't hurt me." He squeaked out. Yup, he wasn't lying. I tried to hide my grin as I stood up and pointed north. "Jersey Refinery it is."

"Lyn, that's south," Tommy whispered next to me, moving my finger to point in the right direction. I heard Cassandra chuckle and I smiled, happy that she was feeling better. I pat Tommy's cheek and wound an arm around his neck, then doing the same to Cassandra. "Let's go bestie and the new love of my life."
