Perfect birthday?

I don’t understand. First of all, did my sister know she was going to die before she actually did? Was she hiding something from me and my family? She wouldn’t. She was the perfect sister and the perfect daughter right? At least that’s what my parents have told me. All this makes no sense.

I reach into the box and pick up the first thing I feel. I was way too scared to look. I am not sure why. I mean wouldn’t anyone be scared if their dead sister left them a box before she died? I removed what I thought was paper out of the box. It was an envelope. It was a pale yellow color and was sealed with a red rose sticker. “Red is my favorite color” I whispered to myself.

Red had always been my favorite color since I was a small kid, and it still is. I opened the envelope very slowly, making sure I did not rip off the red sticker. Inside the envelope were pictures. Pictures of me and Mia. Pictures of us when I was a baby. Pictures of us when we were both sleeping while cuddling each other. Pictures of us eating I cream. Pictures of us on our dads back.

I felt tears roll down my cheeks. I was crying. I missed Mia. I needed her. The last time I saw her was on face time. When she called me and told me she was returning from her business trip to attend my birthday party. After that, I never saw her again. I was 5 at that time. I rubbed the tears off my cheeks.

“Pull yourself to together Zoey!” I whispered to myself. I placed the envelope full of pictures next to me. I took a few breaths. “I might as well look now” I said. I looked inside the box.

There was a book. A black color book with a printed picture of what looked like mars. I didn’t bother to look inside the book. I was more curious about the last item in the box. A pair of glasses. I picked them up. They looked like ordinary glasses. I put them on. “Wow I can see so clearly” I said. These glasses were better than the ones actually own. They had black borders. They were circular. I guess they match my nerdy personality.

I put the pictures and book back into the box and tucked the box under my bed. I took my old glasses and put in inside my drawer. I kept my new glasses on. I changed into a hoddie and jeans and went to the living room. I turned on the television and watched National geographic for a while. After a while, I heard a knock on the door. I opened the door. “Hi mom and dad” I said.

“Hi sweetie” said dad. “Nice glasses by the way, they suit you” said mom. “Thanks mom, it was in the box” I said. “And I suppose you have no questions about what was in the box?” I asked. “No we don’t, we promised Mia that we won’t question you about the things in the box” said mom. “I miss her” I said. My mom stopped picking up groceries and hugged me. “I do too sweetie, but dad and I love you and so did Mia” my mom said. She was crying. I was crying.

My dad started crying. “Oh stop making me cry” dad said, rubbing the tears off his cheeks. “Today is your birthday kiddo! Let’s all be happy” said dad now tickling me and mom. The day passed quickly. However, tomorrow was school.

School is the last place on earth I wanted to be at. The teachers and studies are awesome. But the students are not. Not all of them are nice. Trust me; I have years of experience being tortured by the bad students.
