Found Again

You stared ahead with a blank expression on your face. It.. couldn't be true. Your old lover, Duncan stood in front of you in Malistaires gear, an expression almost as shocked as you felt was on his face. "Duncan you.. You're working with the Cabal?" Your voice broke and cracked. You didn't want to believe it, but you knew it had to be real. Duncan blinked and stepped towards you, almost as if he wasn't sure you were really there. "The Cabal sent me here to stop you." He sounded unsure as he spoke, voice quiet. Your Duncan was never that quiet.

"Why? We got so far together. We were so close. You..." You could feel your stomach drop, heart sinking. He sighed, glaring at the floor like it had hurt him somehow. "The Cabal offered me something better. They don't have any rules, and I can use whatever magic I please!" The boy desperately tried to find something else to say. You could only stare silently at him.

"We were going to save the Spiral together. You promised me we would." You spoke quietly, but Duncan knew what you were saying. It wasn't supposed to be this way. You were both cracking, silently. "I'm sorry." Your eyes snapped up to him as you heard those words. Duncan never apologized; the boy was far too stubborn. As your eyes met you knew that you couldn't fight him. He stepped forward again, and so did you. Again and again until you were so close, you could feel his warm breath on your face.

"I thought you were gone. I came back and you weren't here. I got so scared." Your voice shook, your eyes met his silvers and you reached out with your hand. He reached his out in return, and you linked your fingers together. "I'm sorry. I thought that maybe I could make something for us but... I got so carried away. They told me things I wanted to hear." Duncan confessed to you. "Well you're here now, we can go back to Ambrose and tell him what's going on. We can travel together again..."

Tears had gathered in the corner of your eyes; quickly you wiped them away with your sleeve. "But you don't understand, the Cabal... they'll come after me. You won't be safe." Duncan's eyes were desperate; you knew he wanted to come with you. "It doesn't matter, we can take care of ourselves. We're both strong. We can fight them off together. Please, Duncan." He pressed his lips into a thin line as he stared at his feet.

"Okay." All it took was that one word before he was wrapped safely in your arms, your face buried in the crook of his neck. He returned the embrace, resting his chin on your head. "I'm sorry." Those words escaped him again, but you already knew. You responded as truly as you could.

"I love you."
