Francine Martin had a relatively simple life

Francine Martin had a relatively simple life. She was seventeen, in her last months of high school, and had a caring mother who supported her no matter what. Sure, there were some unfortunate things, like the fact that lived in the Crime Alley neighborhood of Gotham, but Frankie made the most of it.

Her mother worked as an ER nurse most nights, and when she wasn't at the hospital, she worked at a free clinic in Crime Alley. Frankie watched her mother work her entire life, reading her medical books, and accompanying her to the clinic when she was old enough. She was no expert, but she knew enough to work at the clinic when she could (it was Crime Alley in Gotham — no one was checking for credentials.) Frankie knew more than enough about stitching someone up, treating addicts and alcoholics going through withdrawals, and nursing someone back to the land of the living from a bad fight that the nurses were always more than happy to have her help. All Frankie wanted to do was help people.

Frankie and her mother lived in one of the nicer apartment buildings in Crime Alley. Nice was a relative term, considering nothing was really nice in that part of Gotham. Frankie's neighbor, Jason Todd, was a pretty nice guy. He could be rude, and rough around the edges at times, but Frankie knew he had a good heart. She would hear him leave at the beginning of the night, and come home at odd hours of the morning. Frankie thought maybe he worked a night shift job like her mother did, and that's when it all began.

Frankie started leaving the leftovers of whatever dinner they had that night in Tupperware containers in front of Jason's door, and that led to her just making extra food for him when she could. She wanted to make sure he was eating properly, and was always pleased to find the container — empty, and cleaned — in front of her own door a day or two later. When she had extra time, Frankie would also slip in some cookies, or a piece of cake. She didn't see Jason in person very much, but he always made sure to thank her for the food every time they crossed paths. And then one night, as Frankie is getting ready for bed, there's a thump at her door.

Imagine her surprise when she finds a bleeding, and barely conscious, Red Hood on the other side.

( note! just a heads up that all the relationships between frankie and the batfam + friends are going to be platonic in this story. frankie is only seventeen, and no, i will not do that, "just make her eighteen" thing so she can get a boyfriend because that's gross, thanks. )
