I knew it before it was even official. The crowds surrounding the house and the front door covered in police tape gave it away. My heart raced as I pushed through the crowds. Someone grabbed my shoulder, pulling me back. It was Mr. Green, my kindly old neighbour. His eyes were filled with grief as he looked at me, and almost instantaneously, even before he said it, I knew what had happened.

"It's Rose," he said quietly. "I am so, so, sorry."

It was a murder- no doubt about it. They'd found her body in our clubhouse, her favourite place in the world. They wouldn't even let me see the body.

I ran through the house, ignoring the shouts of the emergency officers behind me. I thrust open the kitchen door to where my parents stood, broken and distraught.

"Kelli, you shouldn't be here," Mother said shakily.

"This isn't a place for a young girl," Father added.

The sheriff, who had remained silent until now, cleared his throat. "I think you should all go," he said.

Without another word, he pushed us out the door, onto the streets below. Rose was gone, and I hadn't even had the chance to say goodbye.
