chenle-a young chinese boy-wasn't at the cafeteria, the garden or the sports court like the other kids. instead, he was alone at the music room "practising" for his music exam. the few, if any, friends didn't question him, even though his test was in september and he was practising non stop since the beginning of the year.

he sat down by the piano and instead of pulling out his exam books, he pulled out a piece called "sunflower".

even though chenle's mom forced him to learn the piano, chenle actually enjoyed it. he not only found joy in playing notes that worked beautifully together, but he enjoyed composing. he wasn't the best at it-he knew that-but it didn't stop the young boy from following his dreams.

he found that writing just the lyrics of sunflower already took a lot of weight off his shoulders. a weight that he felt like no one could carry for him. he was quite excited to begin writing down the notes.

after he set up his music, he placed his fingers on the keys and let his fingers figure out the notes as they danced on the piano.

meanwhile, another student, was trying to find a place to eat his lunch. he was all alone in the halls and the loudest noise was his footsteps, until he approached the music room.

he heard someone playing the piano. he wasn't so sure what piece it was, but he liked it. even though the song was just a couple of notes, the simplicity was it's charm. he walked closer to see who was playing.

to his delight, he saw a student that he assumed was about his age. his blonde hair was brightly shining under the sunlight that came through the doors. quietly, jisung opened the door and walked in the room, sitting in the corner to listen to the song the stranger was playing.

"rose girls in glass vases-perfect bodies, perfect faces, they all belong in magazines."

jisung felt his heart drop. it was just the first line and he could feel emotion dripping out of chenle's fingers, and the pianist converting it all into art.

"stretching towards the sky like I don't care, wishing you could see me standing there."

chenle was stuck in his own world, focusing on the notes that he was playing and the words that he was singing. this song was like his diary. someone simple, drafted, rough, yet it was an extension of him. it was a part of chenle that he immortalised in a song that he didn't let anyone see or hear.

"but I'm a sunflower."

he stopped his playing when he heard some someone take a lid off a box. confused he looked behind him and saw a young boy on the floor, eating his lunch in the music room.

"oh my god, I'm so sorry I didn't see you here, let me just pack up," he was so embarrassed. being vulnerable in front of anyone wasn't something he wanted to do, especially in front of a stranger that he never met.

jisung stayed quiet, though he wanted to tell him to stay and play. his voice was stuck somewhere, but he quickly found a piece of it when he saw the pianist open the music room door.

"no wait-" chenle turned his head and looked at jisung, "please stay... I want to hear you play," he asked bashfully. chenle was hesitant at first, yet he figured that one person knowing the authentic chenle wouldn't hurt.

he resumed his place on the black cushioned stool. rushing, he chose the most generic song he could think off. he chose the iconic, cannon in d. not the song he really liked, but it was a song he knew by heart and he was playing for an audience.

jisung stood up and shyly walked over to him. "umm, I liked your sunflower song... it was really beautiful." the compliment thew chenle off guard and he stopped abruptly once again.

he went to his bag and got out his most favoured piece again. jisung looked at the notations and saw the title and the composer. it read "sunflower" with a small "zhong chenle" under it. "chenle's a cute name..." he quietly remarked, making chenle feel even more shy, yet he felt closer to his one audience member.

"what's your name then?"

"park jisung. I'm new here and I'm in year 10 and I love music and dancing! that's probably too much information and you didn't need to know... I'm sorry for rambling-"

"I love music too," chenle cut him off and smiled a bit at the young boy's rambling. "I'm in year 11 and you probably know too much about me already."

jisung tilted his head, wondering what he meant. "this song is a song I'm writing and, um, it's very personal to me and it's like a diary to me," chenle pursed his lips together and looked away from jisung and to his piece.

he saw a line that he wrote and smiled a bit. the line read "this sunflower's waiting for you". maybe all the times he spent in solitude, playing his instruments and writing songs for the deaf was all worth it for thing moment.

"well, if it means anything, I think you'll be a great songwriter," his attention was back on jisung, who was fidgeting with his hands also avoiding eye contact.

butterflies were flying in chenle's stomach, he felt warm and fuzzy inside, and he was ready to show more of himself to the first person that waned to listen. park jisung. he never heard of that person before, but he wanted to spend more time with him; he wanted to get to know the person in the audience; he wanted to be vulnerable with park jisung.

"thanks," his smile grew brighter and jisung's heart melted at the sight in front of him. "y-you think you'd want to write with me?" chenle continued, this time wanting to be more bold with his actions. despite his stutter, he thought he was rather confident.

this time it was jisung's smile that lit the room. "I'd be honoured to write with you, chenle." chenle was relieved that he said yes and he scooched to the side of the stool to make room for his new partner in crime.

"you think we'll make it big?" jisung asked, his fingers hovering over one of chenle's hands, who were ready to play.

chenle looked at the white and black keys staring at him, pondering at the questioned he asked.

"does it really matter?" chenle asked. jisung shrugged and removed his hand, letting chenle play whatever came to his head.

they felt content with each others presence. just two boys-who barely knew each other-shutting the rest of the world away. they were disappointed when they heard the bell ring, so before leaving they decided to take in the moment they had together.

"let's meet here tomorrow! but if you have something that's fine," his voice went quiet towards the end.

chenle's heart melted and he kissed jisung's cheek. "expect me here at lunch, okay?" jisung nodded and watched chenle leave the room, gently touching the lingering kiss in his cheek.

"bye jisungie."

"b-bye chenle."
