fireflies grow t e e t h
their mouths forming like beasts
made of bone and sunshine
they make paths of light
for the grave-digger ants
who are hungry for lizard bellies
for lizards
pale with red throats, reptilian meat
the feast is easy
panting mouths
broken legs twisted, scales raw
claws scraping through stained sand
the ants pull out raw organs
juice smeared on greasy exoskeletons
insecticide reeks in the morning
but the ants do not climb the blades of grass
they tear at flesh
and sleep with full b e l l i e s
