Melinda rushed down the stairs, her backpack unzipped and her hair in a messy bun on top of her head. Needless to say, the girl had slept in. Cindy sat at the kitchen table with a warm mug in front of her, stiffling a laugh as a notebook fell out of Melinda's bag and hit the stairs with a loud slap.

"Don't laugh!" Melinda frowned as she scooped up the notebook and shoved it back into her bag, aggressively zipping it up.

"You're not gonna be late, Mel. I can drive fast." Cindy stated, casually taking a sip of her tea.

"Right, because getting pulled over by a Police Officer will get me there faster." Melinda replied, sarcasm dripping from her tongue. The girl tugged a pair of worn out converse on before running out the front door, with Cindy following just a moment behind her.

"You could just take the car, you know." Cindy pointed out as she walked over to the Acura.

"You're kidding?" Melinda questioned. The girl's had her license for about eighty years, and always rented cars to get to her destinations. She never stayed in one place long enough to pay off a car, and didn't own one.

"Take it." Cindy tossed the silver set of keys overtop of the car, and Melinda caught them with ease. "Make sure you put gas in it when it's needed, and don't leave any messes in it." The dark haired woman listed off her rules, before flashing Melinda a grin as the girl walked to the driver's side.

"Thank you." Melinda smiled back, giving Cindy a quick hug before getting into the sedan. She tossed her backpack into the passenger's seat before sticking the key into the ignition. Melinda felt the car rumble as the engine came to life, and she grinned at Cindy through the slightly tinted window. The girl began driving way, with Cindy waving goodbye in the rear view mirror.

Melinda cautiously drove to Forks High School, pulling into a parking spot two minutes before the first bell rang. As Melinda walked across the parking lot towards the main entrance of the school, she noticed a rusty orange coloured Ford pickup truck parked on the black pavement. It was a vehicle that Melinda didn't recognize, since it seemed every student at the school drove a car in the colour of black, white, or grey. Melinda walked into school with her mind buzzing, thinking of who the truck could belong to. Hopefully a new student, so that she wouldn't be the only one at Forks High School that barely knew anyone. In the two weeks that Melinda had been attending the school, she's made small talk with some classmates but only really talked to Angela Weber, Mike Newton, Eric Yorkie, Jessica Stanley, and of course, Edward Cullen. Her classes, except for Gym and English, were quite lonely.

Melinda fixed her hair as she walked towards her first period Spanish class, realizing it was still in a messy bun that said 'I just rolled out of bed.' Which was true, but Melinda didn't want to appear that way. Instead, she allowed the long fire coloured strands to fall over her shoulders.

Time felt like it was standing still as Melinda sat in her second period Trigonometry class, but eventually the bell rang and she was on her way to English. The girl walked into the room, only to notice that Edward wasn't sitting at his desk. Trying not to think too much of it, Melinda sat down beside his empty seat and pulled her needed English materials out of her backpack. Just before the second bell rang to signify class was about to start, Edward came strutting into the room. Melinda lifted her eyes to watch him walk over to her, almost in slow motion. He smiled softly as he walked over to his desk and sat down. Melinda picked up on a hint of woodsy cologne from the subtle wind he created in front of her.

Edward had on a long sleeved navy blue shirt, while his brownish blonde hair was styled upwards in it's usual messy wave. As Melinda sat beside him, she couldn't help but notice that he was sitting as far away from her as possible in the plastic chair at his desk. His long legs rested against a metal pole of his desk, while one pale hand sat on the corner of the smooth desk surface.

"Hello," he quickly glanced at the redhead beside him, trying to not be rude. Melinda looked over at him with a smile, mumbling a greeting. The girl did a double take of Edward's face, her brows knitting together slightly.

Edward seemed to notice her staring and looked at her through the corner of his eye. "Are you alright?" He asked, barely turning his head to look at Melinda.

The girl cleared her throat before looking away. "Yeah, I'm-I'm okay." She replied, her green eyes shifting nervously across her desk. There was something off about Edward today. His eyes, that were once the shade of gold, were now jet black like spilled oil. Melinda couldn't help but wonder if she was just imagining the colour change and tried to get a better look of his eyes during their entire class. After catching a few glimpses of Edward's dark eyes and watching him rush out the classroom door as soon as the bell rang, Melinda concluded that something was definitely not right with the boy.

Melinda's speculations of a new student were confirmed during her last period Gym class, that she shared with Mike, Jessica, and now a new girl with chocolate coloured hair and skin almost as pale as Edward's. The class was still in their volleyball unit, and the three of them were standing by the net on the other side of the gym.

"Melinda! You're not the only new girl to roam these halls." Mike shouted once he noticed Melinda. The girl made her way over, saying hello to Jessica and Mike when she got there. The new girl looked slightly uncomfortable as she turned to face Melinda, a small smile on her thin lips.

"This is Bella, today's her first day." Jessica introduced the brunette, who lifted her hand up to wave hello.

"I'm Melinda, I got here two weeks ago. Nice to meet you." Melinda stated with a smile of her own.

"I'm glad I'm not the only new kid." Bella laughed nervously as she fiddled with her fingers.

"Mike and Jessica took me under their wings as soon as they saw me. Have you met Eric and Angela?" Melinda asked, trying to make Bella feel more comfortable.

"Yeah, I met Eric first thing this morning, and Angela at lunch." Bella replied. Melinda noticed that her shoulders had relaxed slightly, and her hands were still.

"Ahh, sorry I wasn't there at lunch. I was in the library working on some work." Melinda told her, and it was true. The girl wasn't feeling hungry during her lunch period so she went to the library to work on some Trigonometry homework.

"We were wondering where you were. You missed the grand entrance of the Cullens." Jessica said, rolling her eyes.

"That's okay, I got to see the grand exit of one of them. Edward stormed out of our English class today. He was acting weird all period." Melinda explained, thinking back to third period. She didn't know why Edward acted the way he did, and couldn't help but wonder if maybe she did something to upset him.

"You have him in English? I have him in Biology and he was acting so weird. He had his nose covered with his hand pretty much the entire time and wouldn't stop staring at me." Bella added, now feeling totally relaxed to talk to Melinda. The girls got busy talking about Edward Cullen's weird behaviour, and didn't even notice that both Jessica and Mike had walked away to continue playing. It wasn't until a volleyball came flying in the direction of the two girls that their conversation came to a halt.

"Less chatting, more paying attention." The Gym teacher, Coach Clapp yelled before blowing  the whistle that hung around his neck. "Porter, this side of the gym." He demanded, causing Melinda to say a quick goodbye to Bella and run to the other side of the small gymnasium.
