The girl crept through the streets, obscured by the darkness that shrouded the pavement. She was not supposed to be here, she knew that, but she just couldn't help herself. She knew what she had done, the whole town did: it haunted her dreams and every waking hour of her existence. She couldn't get away from it and maybe that was part of the reason that she had returned, maybe she needed to get away from something, no matter how minuscule.
As the girl slipped from building to building, hiding herself in the shadows, she thought about what she was really doing in this town, so haunted with memories of the past. She couldn't risk being caught and she had nowhere to go. But just as soon as the thought crossed her mind, she knew what she would do, where she could go. She knew it so certainly and so suddenly that she couldn't believe she hadn't thought of it before.
In a flash, she changed her route, ducking behind a building to her right. She quickly made sure that nobody was following her, then started off, silently scurrying around the corner. The girl didn't need to check to make sure that she was going in the right direction. She didn't need to glance at a map or watch for landmarks along the path. She knew the way as well as she knew herself, maybe even better. This route had been drilled into her mind; she couldn't forget it if she wanted to.
As she rounded the last corner and came to a stop, the girl took a second to think. Did she really want to go in? This trip was impermanent, an excursion at best, but if she went in it could easily become something more. Before she could change her mind, the girl stepped forward, into the light. She had finally reached her destination.
