She fidgeted a little. Clearly anxious at what she was telling me. Her hair looked unkempt. Her eyes were teary. She finished talking and waited for a reply.

I stared at her. I could barely get a word out without feeling like my voice would crack if I did. I took a deep breath. I put my hands through my hair.

"I-," I hesitated. She can't hear my response. It would break her.

"I- I just can't. I'm sorry."

She looked down and I could hear her lightly start to cry. I felt like I couldn't make her feel better. She broke out in full tears at this point and ran from the room.

"I'm sorry," I say again. Maybe for myself.
