I WILL NOT BE TALKING ABOUT ALL THE CHARACTERS, JUST THE ONES I THOUGHT WERE THE MOST INTERESTING

HAIDER

Who was Haider afterall? He was a student, about 20-25 years old. He was a romantic and poet at heart. He loved his father and her mother a lot. His love for his father was very evident as he had set out to find him and that is where the story had begun. The quest for revenge for his father is what drove the story after all. He loved his mother a lot too, he hated her for loving his uncle which was quite a big reason and enough reason to not to talk to her but he still did. He still talked to her and listened to her. He also loved his girlfriend like anything. He always spent time to her, listened to her and also fought her brother. At the end when he realized that her girlfriend was being cremated he went on to see her. He knew that he could be killed, his girlfriends brother was there and other army personnel were there, he was a wanted criminal who had killed his girlfriends father(an SSP) but still he went on to see her, knowing that death was inevitable.

He thought that he wanted revenge but he really did not, he just did not have that streak in him. He had two chance to kill his uncle.First when his uncle was reading a Namaz and second was in the end and as you know he did not kill him, he had two perfect chances to kill him just as his father wanted him to, shoot him in the eyes but why didn't he? He had all the reasons to kill him, his uncle was sleeping with his mother and he also got his father killed. In the end when Haider is pointing the gun two voices are going in his head again and again, of his father telling him to kill him and of his mother telling him not to as the cycle of revenge will go on. Another theory for this is that he wanted to have sexual relations with his mother, as we can see in nuances in the movie "Aapko koi chue to main sehen nahi karsakta"  or the fact that he got angry even when his father touched his mother and it is possible that deep inside, somewhere he wanted a sexual relation with his mother. His uncle got that and he hated him for that, his uncle did the wrong thing which maybe Haider wanted to do all along and because of this he did not kill him. As he did just what Haider himself wanted to do.

He did kill Salman and Salman, the SSP and many others in the end but still he could not kill his uncle. The theme of Mystery and Internal Conflict is pretty evident from the character of Haider himself, let alone the movie

GHAZLA

Now Haider;s mother is another important character of the story. So important that the focus of the moview seems to have shifted from Haider to his mother. She loved Haider a lot, he was her son afterall. She did not get her husband killed as many will say, she did not know that Khurram was an informer of the army. Although she did love Khurram, it is clear in the movie as she met and hugs him before her husband death and we all know that she married him after her husband's death. She loved him but could not endorse it. Whenever Haider put this fact in front of her she always remained silent, knowing that he was saying the right thing but she herself could not say it out loud. Now Ghazla was guilt ridden, infact so gilt ridden that she had asked Haider to kill her by shooting her in the head. This guilt subsequently lead to her suicide as she just could not live with the facts that were there in front of her.

ROOHDAR

So this character is very interesting as it is based on the "Ghost" in the original play "Hamlet". However as we could clearly see that he was not a ghost at all. If you have read my overview of Haider you will know what I thought of the character earlier. Just a militant trying to attack Kashmir. However there is one thing that I would now like to add. Roohdar may just be the alter ego of Dr. Hilaal Meer, Haider's father. This is clear also from the dialogues in the movie. As he said "Main aur doctor ek saath pitte the, ek saath phikte the aur eek saath latkaye jaate the jaise shareer aur ruh"  And when Dr. Meer says that they both might just die Irfan Khan said "Aap marsakte hain doctor, main nahi, main to ruh (soul) hon." So the character was just an alter ego. The doctor as we could see was a very good man but somewhere inside he wanted to kill his brother. As he said that his brother's both eyes should be shot and his mother should be left to the judgement of the god(very classic of Shakespeare).
