The Labrador Retriever

We all know the Labs, don't we? "Mans best friend" is mainly what they are known for. Labrador Retrievers originally originated from the Newfoundland, which is in that Canada area. In 1903, they were recognized by the American Kennel Club in England. In 1917, they were first registered in America. Back then, Labrador Retrievers were known as St. Johns dog, or the Lesser Newfoundland dog. Labs come in many colors like chocolate, yellow, black, and in some cases, red. There are also two types of Labrador. These are the English Lab and the American Lab. The English Lab has a more different appearance than the American Lab. The English Labs are more heavier, thicker, and more blockier than the American Lab. A sad fact about these dogs is that the Labs almost used to become extinct. A long time ago, back when Labs were first introduced in Newfoundland, the leader at that time, apprently taxed female dogs more than they did with male dogs. Eventually they wanted all the female dogs killed. Once there were only few female Labs left, people who were going to move to America, decided to breed the labs in America. At that point, the breed was saved. Labs can be medium sized dogs, which means they need alot of food. We are talking about 4 cups of food per day, people. Labs also have a good lifespan
Normally ranging from 10-14 years. There has been cases when labs in particular, have reached the 20 year point. Labs are great hunting dogs, especially great duck hunters. They were bred with webbed feet, if you looked carefully, to help them swim. They are very friendly, especially with kids. They are trainable and can be gaurd dogs. One thing I forgot to mention is that there are silver labs too. Yea, you heard it silver labs. Also known as meth labs. They are considered as a variation of chocolate labs and are bred to have a gene that dilutes thier normal brown pelt color. Sadly, not one kennel club in the world, considers these as a pure bred Labrador because of current DNA testing. There are alot to learn, but in the meanwhile, enjoy our lab that gives us happiness.
