 Chapter One

***Kendall’s P.O.V.***

I could not believe JJ had got me into this. She was requiring me to go to a Masquerade Ball. She thought I was going to die alone, and that I needed to meet someone intriguing, and oh this was just the best way. First things first, Julianna is probably the nicest person I know; and we’ve been best friends since we were born, since we lived in a cul-da-sac neighborhood together until we left and moved to London, a year ago. (we’re 19 now) Second, she absolutely always gets her way over mine.

Which is why I’m in a grand ballroom, wearing the highest heels I’ve ever owned, and can barely breathe in the tightest, but also the prettiest dress I’ve ever seen. It’s a navy blue gown, and I wish I could wear it again after this.

I was standing alone as music started, when I felt a light tap on my shoulder, and a man clear his throat. From what I could see of his features, he had blond hair, and sparkling blue eyes that looked lovely, even though he was covered by a mask.

“Excuse me love, but I have no one to dance with, and I see you are alone as well, would you care to?” he asked, and from what I could tell over the dreadful waltz, he was Irish. He sounded bored, and like he was under the same circumstances as me.

“Why I’d love to look like I’m enjoying my night, and you?” I giggled, and he let out a quiet laugh.

He took my hand and we shuffled awkwardly to an open space and began to ‘move to the music’. We talked quietly, and I noticed several other boys glancing away from their partners, and looking over at us.

I hadn’t asked his name, so I pondered, how am I supposed to say ‘Hey, ____ there are four people continuously looking at you, who are they?’ Then I just kinda word vomitted it out without really know how to say it.

“Um, there are a bunch of guys that keep turning away and looking at us, do you, uh, know them?”

“Yes, I do. They are the ones I said forced me to come, so I made them come too,” he chuckled. “You should have made your friend come as well. But soon the night will be over, thank the lord, because I’m tired. But I guess they were right. I’d like to see you without these masks on sometime.”

Wow, I guess maybe sometimes JJ has better ideas than I gave her credit for.

“That would be great! I have my phone in the bag in the coatroom, we could exchange numbers or something,” I replied.

The boy flashed a grin to signal that was a yes, instead of speaking because the music had ended, and it was the last song. There was hushed conversations brought up as everyone left the giant ballroom, and went throughout the mansion to gather their things.

To keep it as masquerade-like as possible, we were instructed to keep our masks on until we left, so I wouldn’t know who this boy was until I saw him next.

Our things were on the top floor, so I had to try to fit up a spiral staircase to go get it, and it was rather hard, if only the busboy could go get it, just like he had put it there. Soon my mystery man picked me up bridal style, and we got into the room.

“I see we are alone…” he said awkwardly. “I never did catch your name by the way.”

“I’m Kendall, and you?” I said as I gave him back his phone with my number in it.
