Entry One
Grandma gave me this diary as an early birthday present. My birthday is actually tomorrow. I'm excited. Tomorrow I'll be the same age a the hero of old! It's a really important day, at least for boys.
Grandma's going to make my favorite, rolls with butter and her famous soup! The whole island will be there to celebrate! The only bad part is that I have to wear the "Ancient Hero's Garb" all day. But at least it's just one day.
There are three things that I really want. A pet pig, sword fighting lessons, and a boat. I'm probably not going to get any of those things. Grandma thinks pigs are messy, boats are too dangerous, and it's an age of peace, I don't need sword fighting lessons. I already know what I'm getting from Aryll, my little sister. Every year it's the same thing. She lets me borrow her telescope for the day.
I really just want a small party. Me, Grandma, and Aryll. Grandma takes care of us every since mom and dad died. They where going on a sailing adventure to search for new islands and treasure and stuff, but they where caught in a storm.
Another thing I want is a friend. The island I live on, Outset, has nobody my age, which will be ten tomorrow. The closest is Aryll, who's seven. There aren't many of us here. There's me, grandma, Aryll, that's one family, then there's Abe, Rose, Joel, and Zill, that's two families Sue-Belle, Orca, and Sturgeon, that's three families. The only kids are me, Aryll, Zill, and Joel, and tomorrow I won't be a kid anymore.
Aryll would rather watch the seagulls than explore with me, and Zill and Joel aren't allowed to leave their parents line of sight. Sue-Belle and Mesa are the only non native here. She's from Windfall, but she moved here to take care of her grandpa and great uncle, Sturgeon and Orca. Aryll looks up to her. Mesa moved here for...nobody knows, but he says that he's looking for a wife. Here there's only Sue-Belle. They are both from Windfall, so maybe...
I like Orca best. He's the only one on Outset who knows how to fight. His brother, Sturgeon, is more of a books guy.
My favorite spot on the whole island is the middle of the hanging bridge. I like to sit there and dangle my feet over the edge and pretend that I'm on a boat. I went up there in a storm once. It was really fun, but I got in trouble.
