"Sweetheart, don't you think you need a break?" My father asked as I blew air out of my mouth in frustration, my head in my head, my eyes focused on the book in front of me as he set a small cup of tea next to my arm.
"Dad, this is the most important test this semester. The score will tell them if I deserve to stay in school or be let out. I need to pass this for the sake of my last year." I huff, taking the cup into my hands, and slowly sipping on it.
"I'm proud of you, Maia. I really am, and I know your mother would be too." My dad said, a small smile on his face as he placed a kiss on my head before walking away.
"Thanks, dad." I smiled, the bell above the door ringing. I turn my head to look at the figure walking in my peripheral vision, my eyes connecting with the man from yesterday. I immediately look away and try to focus back on my work. My brain is trying to wrap around the words that my eyes are reading but it's very difficult when his presence is very powerful. I don't feel threatened by him, not at all. More like intimidated, if you will. I forgot the book and I look towards his direction.
I met with the hazel eyes.
I held the gaze as long as I could before my dry eyes started to become irritated and tears started flooding them. I huff in exasperation as I close all my book, shoving them straight into my backpack. I pull my tea closer to myself and stare down at it. I'm tired. I rub my eye as I push it away suddenly turn off by the thought of drinking. I shake my head slightly, and proceeded to get up. Grabbing my pack by the strap, I throw it over my shoulder.
"I gotta go, dad." I said as I gave my father a side hug and a kiss of the cheek. "Alright sweetheart, be safe."
Not even a few hours passing, I returned to the diner after countless books I had skimmed through to even suppress half way through my studying.
The diner was nearly closing; an hour to go, and by this time, service slowed down. I scanned over the diner, my eyes landing on a small family, and an elderly couple. My sister was handling them, so that just left me to clean up a bit. I headed to the back, and slid up my sleeves ready to get my hands dirty. I started with the dishes, where surprisingly there wasn't much to clean, meaning my father has started before leaving us to close up.
After finishing, I slipped on heavy duty gloves, and I made my way to the bathroom. This was going to take some serious manpower. Before entering I made sure to tie up my hair, cover my clothing with an extra large apron, boots, and my gloves. Last additional touch is my mask. Despite my cleaning of the bathroom every night, it still manages to end up a mess by the end of the night. I finish up in there, and time to take off my armor.
A messages pops up on my phone, and I realize the time has passed Ten P.M before even acknowledging the text.
I walk directly out the bathroom doors, and I walk over to Lucy, who was putting her things away in her backpack.
"You heading out?" I question, putting my hair back down.
"Yes, ma'am. I have an incredibly long day tomorrow, so I need to go hit the sack." She replied almost instantly.
"Okay, babygirl. Tell dad I have a little more to finish up, and I'll be home soon." I managed to get out, grabbing the water bucket and the mop.
"Love you, sissy." Lucy said.
"I love you too, sweet girl." I smiled, giving her a swift hug before walking her out.
As soon as she's out, I wait till she is safe in her car, and I pull the diner keys out of my pocket. I quickly lock up all of the doors, and switch the signs over so it shows 'closed,' to the rest of the world. This is my favorite part of the night. Alone.
Despite the diner being in the middle of nowhere, I had absolutely no problems with being here by myself, considering the fact that I grew up with the people living around us. Now don't get me wrong, a murderer could be amongst us, but the likelihood of them being here, is very, highly unlikely.
I turn on my music, and I get to mopping the floors and wiping tables. Not at all a hard job.
My favorite song in the entire world comes on, and I had no choice but to stop and sing along. Now you may be asking yourself, what song? It is 'Heart Attack.' And no, not by Demi Lovato. It's by Trey Songs.
I get lost in the sound of my own voice, I cancelled out the rest of the world.
A loud knock suddenly broke me out of my free concert, and scared the living daylights out of me.
I look towards the door.
Hazel.
