"Stacey, you have got to be kidding me right now!" I say, as we walk past all of the football players. My eyes are glued on Devon Luke. He's so hot.
Anyway...
"It's like we don't even exist." Whispers Stacey as we walk through the doors of our school.
"Seriously. Like, how hard is it to just say hi to us? I mean, I know we aren't popular and all. But, at least be polite."
We tried to go talk to Devon, but he just stood there and stares at us. Talk about awkward.
"Well, we are kind of nerds." Says Stacey as she opens her locker and I open mine.
"So, who cares. We're still people. It's not like we're ill or something." I say, shoving stuff angrily into my locker.
"Ill?"
"Yeah, you know. It's not like if we touch them, they'll immediately turn into a nerd or something." By this time I'm floored.
"Dallas, that's how it is with our generation though."
"I know. It sucks." I slam my locker door and she shuts hers. We walk to our class together. Surprisingly we have all of our classes together. Even lunch!
"So you like him then?" Asks Stacey as we enter the classroom. We're always early.
"Who Devon?" I ask. She nods.
"Well, yeah. Who doesn't have a crush on him? Do you think he has a girlfriend?"
"Yes, every football player has a girlfriend." She says, taking out her journal and writing down the date and todays writing prompt.
"You don't know that. What if he's single?" I say, picturing Devon and I together.
"I doubt it. He's like the most popular guy in school. How could he not have a girlfriend?"
"I don't know but he's really cute. Prom is coming up pretty soon. Maybe he'll ask me. If he doesn't have a girlfriend."
"I don't know, Dallas. I wouldn't get your hopes up about it." Says Stacey, as she finishes the writing prompt.
First and second period fly by fast. Stacey and I were both eager to get to the cafeteria to get the first of the ice cream. It's delicious!
We get there pretty early and drop our things off for our next class at a table.
"So, chicken or ice cream first?" I say. Stacey heads over to the ice cream bar quicker than you could say ice cream.
"I'll have the vanilla cup with chocolate chips, please." She says, as she hands the cafeteria lady her money.
"Here you go. Enjoy." The lady hands her the ice cream and Stacey immediately plows her face into it. Shoving two spoonfuls at a time in her mouth.
"I'll have the chocolate cup with vanilla chips please." I say, handing the lady my money and laughing at the weird noises coming from Stacey as she enjoys her ice cream. She must've got a brain freeze.
"Thank you." I say, as I take my ice cream and take a small bite of it.
"Chicken?" Asks Stacey as I walk over to her.
"Yeah, chicken."
We grab a tray and make our way down the line just as people are coming in.
"Good timing, huh?" I say, as I look around. As I turn back around, I'm face to face with Devon Luke.
"Ah!" I say, stepping back a bit, and bumping into Stacey.
"Dallas, what is wr--." She stops and stares at Devon and I.
"Oh, sorry for scaring you." He says, grabbing a sandwich and smiling, then walking away.
"Um, yeah. Just, uh, cool." I stutter, watching him leave with the sandwich. Stacey grabs my arm, pulling me out of my trance.
"Come on, Dallas. We're holding up the line." She says, playing for her chicken sandwich. I do the same, still unable to move, or speak.
"Way to keep you're cool, Ice Cube." She says, as she pulls a chair up for me.
"I was cool. Wasn't I?" I look around, searching for Devon. But, he's nowhere to be found.
"You were frozen. You looked like a deer in headlights." She takes a bite of her sandwich.
"I did?"
"Yes."
"What just happened?" I say, rethinking the moment.
