"Claire? Have you got time for a quick chat?"
"Sure," I sighed under my breath as I turned around. I'd been about to walk out of the door at the end of the day and go home when Richard called me back into the counselling centre where I worked. "Is everything okay?"
"That's what I was going to ask you," he smiled. Most women would find Richard, the head therapist and my boss, attractive with his thick, dark hair and deep-set blue eyes, but I didn't. I don't know why. He just wasn't my type. He took me into his plush office, so much nicer than mine, and told me to take a seat. "You don't seem very happy at the moment. Is everything okay?"
"Yes," I lied. "I've just got a few things going on at home. I'm sorry. I'll try to be a bit more myself tomorrow."
Richard smiled. His overly white teeth glimmered in the early evening sunlight coming in through the open window blinds. "Great. If there's anything you need to talk about, I'm here for you, okay?"
"Of course," I forced a smile back. I did have a few worries at home, my husband and I had fallen out of love, money was tight, but that wasn't why I'd been feeling miserable at work. The issue was that the young men I'd been counselling - my job here was to give therapy and counselling to young men that had emotional problems - had all been struggling with more than I'd been able to help them with. I hadn't been very successful so far and was beginning to feel like I wasn't up to the task. I was losing faith in myself, and any love I had for being a counsellor was fading fast. I turned to leave as he nodded for me to do so. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"You will," he agreed, "Also, before you go. I've got a new patient coming in tomorrow. A rather special case. Hopefully, he might cheer you up."
"Fantastic," I said, trying to keep the sarcasm out of my voice. Leaving Richard and his luxury office behind, I headed home to my boring life, feeling more miserable than ever.
