"I- um.." I stammered, trying to ignore my heart thumping rapidly in my chest. I took a shaky breath in a feeble attempt to calm my nerves.
My mind started to race. I had two options, come clean about my memory loss or fake a story about how I accidentally ended up here after some crazy party. Option two seemed very appealing, since I wasn't very keen on exposing my current vulnerability to a semi-complete stranger, he could be a lunatic for all I knew. Then again, his odd friendliness and referral from attacking me after I slung my metal pipe at him acquitted him of being a serial killer. Also the truth lasts the longest, how long would I be able to keep up the lie and pretend my life was fine and dandy.
I didn't realize I had been zoning out until I snapped back to reality with a curtesy cough from Adrian, who had grown impatient while waiting for me to answer his relatively simple question. My cheeks reddened when I realized I had been zoning out for quite some time while calculating the likelihood of Adrian's serial killer status. "Earth to Alex, are you still there?" He teased.
Be it the odd sense of familiarity I found in his presence, or the fact that he hadn't killed me in the short time we had shared together, deep down I knew option one was the way to go.
Clearing my dry throat, I looked back at Adrian. His brown eyes looked back at me knowingly. "I don't know." I said honestly while averting my eyes. Embarrassed by my own helplessness.
"What do you mean you don't know?" He snorted, clearly taken aback by my response.
"It means exactly what I said, I don't know. All I know is that I woke up in that warehouse a couple of hours ago and that my name is Alex." Now that the reality of my situation had been translated into actual said words, I felt even worse. If a self destruct button for humans existed I would have pushed it without a doubt.
"Shit." Adrian said awkwardly while scratching his neck. "So you don't remember anything it all?"
"Nothing."
He took a deep breath, the uneasiness disappearing from his demeanor. "I guess that means you need a place to crash, right?" He said while getting up to his feet.
What the fu-
My thoughts were interrupted by his hand stretching out to me. Hesitantly I took it and let him help me up to my feet. His hand was cold.
Odd.
"Why?" I asked him bluntly.
"Why what?"
"Why help me? Why are you being so friendly? Or did the impact of your fall make you forget I just threw a metal pipe at you minutes ago?" I said, my tone almost angry. He wasn't making any sense. But then again, neither did I in my peculiar situation.
He shrugged, brushing off my agitation. "Is it that hard to believe there still are some decent human beings out there? Besides," he said, melancholy entering his gaze, "you remind me of a certain someone, and I wouldn't want them to left alone to fend for themselves in a place like this."
I raised an eyebrow, his words taking me back a bit. His genuine confession caught me off-guard. I let out a half-hearted laugh. Not sure if he was a gift sent from the heavens or my impending doom.
I guess I don't have any other choice.
"Well then, since I have nowhere else to go and no-one else to rely on, I guess I'd like to take you up on that offer." I said, sealing the deal. His chocolate brown eyes gleamed with relief.
"Awesome," Adrian grinned, "follow me." He beckoned me with a jerk of his chin while turning around and started to walk towards what seemed to be his truck, parked just behind the old warehouse's entrance.
Looking back on this situation, I wonder if our fates would have turned out differently, had I come up with a story about some crazy rave last night. But on the night of August 26, at exactly 08:28 pm, I had taken a leap of faith. The abyss of uncertainty coaxed me into it, and there was no turning back.
