For a moment, neither party spoke, regarding each other with caution and, in the case of the Compies, open hostility. They were all dressed in robes, some with hoods, made of patched orange and cinnabar dyed fabric, making a colourful assortment of people. On some silent signal, they stepped backwards in unison, save for one hooded person in the middle.
I was thoroughly creeped out and shuffled my feet backwards, prepared to run. The hooded figure pushed open the wooden gates, walking towards us. When they were twenty steps away, the figure pushed his hood down, revealing the face of a man. His ears were pointed, like a wolf’s, and the dark mane of hair on his head had spread to the bottom half of his face.
I was too shocked and too scared to say anything or move, but Eduír made a slight noise in the back of his throat. I couldn’t tell if it was disdain or fear. I half-expected the wolf man to get down on all fours and start snarling. He did indeed open his mouth, and I saw that his teeth were sharpened into fangs, his tongue longer than normal. He moved closer, and his eyes were pale and yellow.
“I’m Izri,” the wolf-man said, and did the last thing we expected—he bowed. “I am the leader of this village. We welcome you.”
“Thank you,” Mora replied formally, but he didn’t return the bow, just stared.
“How will you be staying?” Izri’s words sounded polite, but they held a dangerous undertone I couldn’t quite decipher.
“We’re just passing through,” Eduír spoke edgily.
Izri nodded. “Very well—“
He was interrupted by a woman with indigo scales covering her entire head and stretching down her neck. I hadn’t seen her exit the gates, and involuntarily took another step back as she seemingly appeared out of nowhere beside Izri. Though her head was scaled, her bare arms showed human skin.
“Where do you come from?” she asked. Her voice had a raspy tone to it. Eduír made a repulsed face as we saw a forked tongue flick between her teeth. “My name’s Andra, by the way.” She smiled widely. I was deciding between smiling back and running back the way we had come when she leaned closer to us. She smiled like rotted animals.
“That’s none of your business,” Eduír stated. “We won’t be a bother to you. We just need to get through the village.”
“Oh, but you see…” She stepped closer to us, walking a full circle around our group before continuing. “We’re a hospitable bunch, and we like to get to know our guests a little better.” She smiled again, showing off her pointed yellow teeth.
Another man joined her, spiralling brown antlers twisted back behind his head. He wore no shoes, displaying hooves instead of feet. This oddity of animal-creatures was freaking me out. He eyed us with suspicion. “What Andra is saying, is that if you don’t tell us what we want to know, you aren’t allowed to pass.”
Eduír stiffened. “Then we’ll be forced to fight you.”
Izri pushed them both back. “I apologize for Andra and Asaph’s behaviour. Things have been rather tense these past few days, what with the rising demon activity in the area. We just need to know your species."
“An assortment of faeries, angels and kitsune,” Mora answered. It technically wasn’t a lie, he just forgot to mention the half-sidhe and half-demons in the group as well… “We’re not demons, I assure you.” Well, that was an outright lie.
Izri nodded, looking doubtful, and stepped us aside to let us pass. He gestured for Asaph and Andra to step aside as well, which they did rather reluctantly. As I passed Izri, I noticed something familiar wrapped around his shoulders.
