[ Long Ass Author's Note: Hey y'all! I haven't actually used Wattpad since circa 2013, but I figured this is a better place than AO3 to post original work. Anyways! This story is the second rewrite of a rpstory I did with a friend back innnn 2014? The original was posted on fictionpress, and then the first rewrite is on AO3 under the user grimdarkroxy (me!). Both previous versions were titled 'How Are We Soulmates?'. I've actually swapped Josh for Chase since Josh technically wasn't my character, and the soulmate 'system' is actually entirely different, as well as most of the plot. Hey, ya girl needed something to reignite her interest in this! Anyways, enjoy! ]
—————————Lately, Daniel wishes he could cry and not hate himself for it. That's what he's doing right now - hating himself and crying on the floor of his bathroom, tears constantly flowing down his face. He distantly thinks to himself that he needs to wash his face before his dad gets home and he has to go to school, but he's just too tired to move right now. His throat is raw from openly sobbing for fuck knows how long, and the only thing that keeps him sane is running his fingers over the name and numbers on his wrist because he still has time.
Daniel still has time before he meets his soulmate. Sure, it's only about two hours, but Daniel thinks - knows - that it's enough time for him to get mentally prepared.
He just needed some time to cry, and he doesn't think anyone would blame him.
It's the day his mother died- his birthday.
Daniel finally feels energy flow back into his limbs and so he stands, the tears thankfully residing. He splashes water on his face, carefully avoiding his hair as best he can. He dries his face with a green hand towel, and breathes. He goes to get ready for school.
Daniel's ready by the time his dad gets home, his usual hoodie, jeans and sneakers on. He's waiting by the door outside, idly playing a game on his phone with his bag on his back.
"Hey kiddo, you seem pretty eager today! I can't remember the last time you waited outside for me... Was it middle school?" His dad asks, as the two get into Daniel's dad's truck.
"Yeah." Daniel says, and puts his phone to sleep mode.
It's quiet in the car for a while, until they're almost to Daniel's highschool.
"It's not your fault Daniel." His dad tells him, and Daniel nods tiredly.
"I know dad." Daniel says softly, and his dad reaches over at a red light with a hand to squeeze Daniel's shoulder.
"I know you know, but I tell you every year and I'm going to keep telling you every year. Until you don't need to hear it." Daniel's dad says and Daniel nods.
"I know." He repeats. They pull up to Parkland Highschool, and Daniel starts to get out.
"Love you dad." He says.
"I love you too kiddo. Have a good day at school." His dad replies, and Daniel starts his third week of senior year as he shuts the passenger door and watches his dad drive off.
It's almost as boring as the first week, but Daniel supposes it helps take away from what today is.
Annie quietly passes him a note in their first class - homeroom - and Daniel doesn't have to open the folded piece of lined paper to know it's the annual smiley/frowny face note. He does open it towards the end of class, circles in between the faces like he always has and quietly passes it back. They'll talk about it briefly during lunch, like they always do, and then drop the subject unless Daniel brings it up.
There's something different this year though, students are whispering about a new kid that just transferred in, some guy from France. Daniel doesn't pay it much mind until the transfer ends up being in his homeroom. He's late, walking through the door five minutes after the bell, and Daniel immediately thinks he's really handsome.
The teacher is a bit disgruntled, as Ms. Gaere usually is with interruptions, but she gestures for the guy to introduce himself.
"Chase Delacroix, eighteen, just moved here from France a month ago." Chase says, and Daniel blinks. That's- Daniel thinks, and his eyes meet Chase's and he hears a ringing in his ears.
Well, apparently his soulmate is French.
"Oh dear..." Daniel hears Annie mutter, before Daniel passes out.
