[Vaguely long A/N: Jeez, it has really been a minute. Sorry for the wait, seasonal depression is really wack! I'll be trying to update this more often, but if I don't assume I've just been slapped with writer's block lol. Thanks for reading!!]

Grey fields, grey flowers, everything around him was grey. Was it supposed to be? Weren't colorless dreams a bad sign? Or was Daniel making that up?

"Daniel, wake up sweetheart."

Up...? Which way was up again? A stream of soft blue light, wait, was that it? Was that 'up'? Yeah, Daniel thought, that's up.

Daniel's eyes open without much preamble, no fanfare or heavy flickering. Just a blink or two, and Daniel's eyes adjust to the lack of fluorescent light. He chances a deep breath. Nothing hurt too bad, maybe his head and his wrist but he knew that those two areas were par for the course.

"Oh, Daniel thank God, son I was so worried." His father's voice says, and Daniel looks to his side. Yeah, his dad is there alright, sitting in one of the hard, dark blue, overly plastic and metal chairs the nurses office had for visitors.

"Dad, hey," Daniel starts, before coughing. Immediately a cup of water is put in his hands, and he sips slowly. Right, he thinks, the temporary dry throat. Why had his younger self been excited for this again? It takes a second for the dryness to go away, but when he can swallow without feeling like he's in a desert, Daniel tries to speak again as he notices his father's teary eyes.

"Dad, it's okay, it's just the soulmate sickness. It's only for a couple hours." Daniel says, trying to comfort his visibly upset father.

"You were in and out of it, talking in your sleep." His dad says, and Daniel blinks in realization.

"Oh," Daniel whispers. He reaches out to his father, placing his hand on his.

"It's okay, I'm okay." Daniel said, and his dad sniffs, nodding.

"What time is it?" Daniel asks, and his dad chuckles.

"You've only been out of it for an hour. Nurse said you were good to go for lunch in here if you wanted. Said your friend could visit too. I'm assuming she meant Annie." His dad tells him, and Daniel nods, before thinking.

"Is, uh. Is my soulmate okay? I'm pretty sure he was the transfer in class but-" Daniel says, before pausing. He looks at his dad, hand tense. In the back of his head, Daniel knows his dad won't hate him, but it's still scary, not knowing if his dad will accept him for not being interested in girls.

"But?" His dad encourages, and Daniel clears his throat.

"But I passed out before I could see his reaction." Daniel finishes, moving his hand off of his father's so he can look at his mark.

Sure enough, the timer mark has stopped, and the previously unreadable words above the 00:00:00:00:00:00:00 have become clearer. Sure enough, it reads Chase Delacroix. Daniel knows his mark is the more common form of the timer mark- the one where the name's unreadable to you and everyone else; letters shifting in and out of view too fast for anyone to process. Sure, Daniel hadn't known Chase's name before, but when he had introduced himself in class... it had just felt so familiar. He couldn't imagine the other form of his mark, where you just knew your soulmate's name.

Absentmindedly, Daniel rubs the multiple zeroes. Sometimes he wishes he had a navigation mark, then maybe he could've met his soulmate yesterday, or tomorrow, next week even.

He supposes the fates aren't that kind. His father sighing breaks Daniel out of his thoughts.

"His grandmother and him checked in about thirty minutes ago, he looked fine. Cassidy, his grandma, said they'd be up to dinner at their house with Chase's parents. You want to go kiddo?" His dad asks, and Daniel sits up, noting that his head feels clearer somehow. Weird, he should have had the headache for at least another hour.

"Yeah. That sounds good. Did the nurse say anything about leaving early? Are you okay with taking me home? I'm really exhausted, and I need some downtime if I'm going to eat dinner somewhere else tonight." Daniel says, sounding unsure. His dad looks a little relieved, and nods.

"I'll go let her know and we'll get you checked out. Annie brought your stuff up with you I think, your backpack and phone are there if you need to text her." His dad says, smiling weakly before standing and walking out of one of the two rooms the schools had for soulmate meetings.

Daniel sighs, slowly swinging his legs off the bed and grabbing his bag. He checks his phone and sees that the group chat has been, more or less, blowing up. At least Annie had had the forethought to silence his phone.

"Jeez Annie, you couldn't calm them down could you?" Daniel chuckles, smiling before he shoots off a quick text to the group.
