George’s plan would’ve worked if the rose hadn’t suddenly died. Clara had desperately tried to get out of her house but she was locked in and her house started to burn. She screamed and screamed but it was not like anyone would hear her.
When George hadn’t heard anything from Clara for a while, he went through the escape tunnel that they had been building for days just for Clara. He immediately saw a fire in the distance and assumed it was something to do with Clara.
Without the care of getting caught, he ran and ran until he was suddenly engulfed in the intense smoke coming from the house. He ran in the house, using the hem of his shirt to cover his mouth from the smoke. He found Clara curled up in a ball crying out, “I’m sorry George, I’m sorry!”
He picked her up bridal style and battled the flames, trying to get out of there. Once he got out, he nursed Clara for a few minutes before going back the way he came. He knew what he had to do and he knew his normal life would be over now, just because of Clara. But they had to keep running, just keep running.
Because now the story isn’t about two lovers writing to each other but the story of how two lovers escape and find a way to be together.
