——————————————————————

You know, she wasn't always like that. I remember the day she won the school spelling bee. She was so happy, she could barely believe it herself. Why would she believe she had really won? She knew for sure there were other people smarter than her. But the thing was that she studied the spelling bee list over and over until she had memorized every single spelling. That was the kind of girl she was. The girl was smart, yes, but she also studied a lot for tests, which always resulted in her getting excellent grades.

This young lady was caring, friendly, albeit a bit shy. Her classmates cared about her, although she wished they had talked more to her. Regardless, she was always there for them. She was the teachers' favorite student. She was the perfect student, the perfect person in their teacher's eyes. She was quiet, smart and friendly. What else could they possibly wish for in a student?

Although in reality, her life wasn't perfect. Her parents always abused her, mentally, although never physically because they felt that abuse wouldn't hurt much. Their daughter would never be ideal for them. She would never be like them, would never kill people or do drugs as they did. She would never make their family name rise to the top in the gangster's society. So the obvious thing to do was to make sure her life was as miserable as possible. To make that happen, they never gave her love. They made sure to give her just enough food to not let her die, just to starve. For her to feel the pain of starvation as a reminder of her being a failure.

This teen girl was strong-willed. She never allowed her situation at home to let her down, much. She thought that maybe, one day, her parents would change and see how their daughter would bring the family name to the top in actual society. They would love her and finally appreciate her. So she kept studying and kept getting perfect grades. One day, one day, they will love me. She always thought and reminded herself of the same thing. Every day, the same words crossed her mind as her parents started yelling horrible things to her.

But one day, everything changed. She had come home from school, a normal day as always for others. But for her, it had been an excellent day. The state test scores had shown she had the best scores of the entire state. Finally, the day she had been waiting for had arrived. Her parents would finally come to their senses, and she would be loved for the first time.

To her dismay, there was nobody home. Which wasn't surprising, since her parents always came back home at midnight, if they were early. She guessed that she'll just have to stay awake until then, even if she had her math final tomorrow. More time to study and to clean the house, she thought. However, she saw a blue envelope, average in size, a stark contrast to the size of its impact. The following is what it said:

To the daughter, we never cared for or loved,

You do know you are a great disappointment, don't you? We never even wanted you when you were born. But we thought that at least you would bring our family name honor. That you would make us one of the most famous gangsters. But apparently you don't want to make us proud or happy. You simply don't care about our family tradition. All we ever wanted was for you to become a killer, not just one, but the most famous and feared killer. But no, all your life you've been a disappointment to us, to our family name, and even to yourself. That's all we have to say, stranger. From now on, you are not our daughter, so forget us and live that stupid life of yours. Live miserable forever.
