'Grandma?' I called that night as I got home and she was already sitting out on the porch so she laughed. 'Hey.' She said and I responded before taking a seat beside her on the swing.
In her hands was a book that she took with her everywhere, even to dinner. She placed the book on my lap the second that I sat down.
'I see that you didn't listen to my warnings, Joshua.' She said and I kept my eyes on the book, afraid that my punishment would fly out of it.
'How did you know?' I asked and she chuckled.
'Trust me, I do. Aside from the black cords wrapped around you...and your friends, I know because she no longer haunts mydreams.' Grandma laughed and I shook my head in disbelief.
'Wait, what?'
She looked over at me and the mischief in her eyes told me that she was where I had inherited most of my genes from. 'No.' I said and she nodded. 'Grandma, how?'
She sighed looking over at the streets.
'When I was younger, my grandmother was a bit of an old fashioned woman. She told my mother and father what to do all the time and out of respect they had no choice but to obey her. I on the other hand was disobedient and found that no matter what she did, I hated her for telling my parents how to run their lives and I swore that I would never let her run mines.'
I always did what I was told not to. So, when she had told me the story of the lady, I had listened intently and as soon as she was done, I had raced on over to my friend's house to tell her all about it. Together we called our other two friends before we all decided that we would see her all for ourselves.'
That night had been so lonely and dark. Back then there weren't street lights in this part of the town and we were still the candle light bunch so that's what we had in our hands while sneaking out. Candles.' She laughed lightly and I could see her eyes twinkling excitedly.
'I can only imagine what you and your friends saw.' I said and she looked at me knowingly.
'I'm sure that you can. If we could have taken it back, we wouldn't, though it has been a burden, we have never regretted anything that we have done. You and your friends should either. If it's one thing I've learnt over the years, it's that you should never run away from them or they'll chase after you. Face them.'
I looked over at her and she smiled before patting my back and walking inside of the house. Five minutes later, I realized that I still had the book on me.
On the cover were the words; "Never lock eyes with a spirit so powerful; for it would surely mean that death was on your shoulders" and a key hole was embedded near the edge.
I didn't open it and neither did I know what was inside. I just sat there and stared at it before eventually falling asleep on the swing.
The next morning was a racket. I woke up to my usual alarm clock; Dante screaming next door. Nearly ten minutes later, he was sitting on the swing beside me.
'I gotta tell you something.' Dante said before describing his dream with so much expressions and dramatic outbursts that at the end, I was happy that I had slept outside and far away from him.
