The 8th section isn't as big as some of the others but it's still creepy scurrying around the area, watching your back intently. Joshua went in the other direction to the west of section 8. I on the other hand went east, time has gone quickly. Daylight only comes around 8 hours every day now, it's not too long but we make do, we wouldn't be able to change it anyway. It's been about 5 hours since we set off from our red brick home, boarded up windows surrounding the exterior topped off with some barbed wire and glass. I haven't come across any Dead yet, they hide at day but some still walk around by day. Those who do are strong, strong but dumb. We can easily outrun them by day but at night they gain energy. We sometimes call them Night-vert's as they feed off energy at night as humans do off day.
I already had a good range of materials and supplies,
7, 2 litre bottles of fresh spring water.
9 cans of canned food.
1 hoe and a leather man knife.
2 ponchos, 4 canteens, 3 pairs of wool socks and a wool blanket.
I believe that together Joshua and I would have enough materials to most likely survive another 7 weeks minimum.
I start to repack my bag when I see a flare signal shoot up over on the east side, no doubt about it, it is Joshua.
I follow the red string of flare off into the east area my heavy backpack clunking recklessly as I jog on the deserted road.
Joshua approaches me as I jog up to him. He is intently watching north through his binoculars.
"What's wrong? You do realise those flares are for emergencies only!" I am exhausted and all he's doing is looking through some bloody binoculars?
"I know, but look." He points off to where was watching through his binoculars. I grab out a pair of my own and look off into the distance. Green fields some houses nothing much. Wait, there's a prison. There are stacks of army troops hoarding dead into the prison. There locking up dead in the prison, that's great! Maybe that's why there haven't been many dead around, or people, "Are those the dead?" I ask nervously. Joshua shakes his head. "I went exploring earlier, it's a safe haven. A fortress." I grin but regret it immediately, it's not safe up here where we are. We have to get down there, get into the safe haven. "We need to get there!" I practically yell. But Joshua just shakes his head, Joshua is smart he was the smartest in his class whatever he says will be logical and the truth. "We have no idea what they are doing, they may be testing them for treatments for the disease for all we know. Or it could be a safe haven. But I know that they won't let us keep our food and we won't be able to get back out." He looks to me for a nod of agreement. "So you say we should wait it out?" I ask directly after him. "Yes, but I have another plan." He gives a little smile.
"We aren't the only kids in this city, the more allies we have the stronger we are." He smiles.
"So we should join other kids and what?" I ask curiously.
"Rebuild our life." This time he looks at me for an answer, I just smile.
Joshua leads the way back as the sun slowly drops over the horizon.
